Mercury Cougar 1999 engine is shacking?

I bought 1999 cougar V6, engine is shacking stopped or driving I changed all 6 spark plugs and the wires (cables) and the engine still shaking, could it be cylinder? or what could it be? transmission seems good no problem hefting (auto trans ) I took all of the 6 wires when the car was turned on and 5 of the 6 has electric but one does not do any thing...I just unplugged them and looked for a little sparks, but 1 of them does not work. if it's cylinder do you know how much is it cost to get it done? thanksMercury Cougar 1999 engine is shacking?you said one isn't sparking? trace that wire back to its source, I'm guessing it would be a coil pack right?Mercury Cougar 1999 engine is shacking?good to hear buddy, take it easy, good luck

Mercury Cougar 1999 engine is shacking? It might not be the cyclinder or the spark plug.

There wire that comes from the distributor to the spark plug might be worn out, so check that. Change the spark plug for the faulty cylinder if you havnt.

  • I have a rough idle! Help!?

I have a very bad idle when I'm in the D position. But when I put it in neutral or park, it lessens. I've changed my pcv valve, air filter, timing belt, and spark plugs/wires so far. What could it be? I will be flushing my coolant(irrelevant) and replacing my fuel filter soon. Will that help, or is it my motor mounts?

Also my check engine light is on and I have to change both o2 sensors.

How much is it to change the motor mount? Easy job for a weekend mechanic or no?I have a rough idle! Help!?i dont believe its the motor mounts because it would shutter the whole car regardless of whether its in gear or not. the fuel filter may very well solve your problem, depending on how long its been since its been changed. bad oxygen sensors could also potentially be the same since they can make the car misfire if theyre worn. good luck. shouldnt be too bad.I have a rough idle! 1986 Ford F150 distributor cap firing order? Identify changed out motor.?

I think the firing order and location of the spark plug wires on the distributor cap of my truck are wrong. The motor has been changed out of the truck before we got it. How do I identify the motor in it to look up correct distributor cap wire placement/firing order?1986 Ford F150 distributor cap firing order? Identify changed out motor.?You should see a tag or imprint somewhere on the block that has a serial/model number on it. It may be hard to find under grease, components etc, but it is the only way to know for sure. If you know any ford guys, they can usually tell you what engine it is and you could find the firing order online. Look for that Tag or stamp on the block!

Ford firing orders GENERALLY, but not always are the same. On some of the high output engines the firing order is different.

for id, on the windsors (302-351) the radiator hose goes into the front of the manifold, on the Clevelands it goes straight to the block, and on the 429/460 it goes to the top of the manifold..

How can I get my 92 GMC Jimmy started?

Ok so i've changed the starter, fuel pump, fuel filter, Battery, Spark Plugs, and new wire set. It catches if I spay ether in to it, but as soon as it sucks up the ether, it stops. I am completely out of Ideas on where to go from here. Please help me.How can I get my 92 GMC Jimmy started?needs feul.

    fuel injectors.

    fuel pump relay?

    fuelpressure regulator?

... whne you turn the key to ON--can you hear the fuel pump? if so, dont worry about the relay.

when you try to start it, take the breather off--crank it while some one looks into the intake--you see gas? (if it's a TBI injection, which mine is) if you dont, then it's a injector problem of some sort--check the harness conenctions, go from there.

fuel pressure regulator is a huge possiblity.

    good luck.

just some ideas to toss at you.How can I get my 92 GMC Jimmy started? An engine needs three basic components, fuel, compression, and fire, to start. It sounds like you are not getting any fuel, so checking the fuel system would be a good place to start.

If you don't already have one, you might want to get a manual, which will show you how the different systems work. Haynes is cheap, while Chiltons is more expensive and sometimes has better instructions.

Ford aerostar no fire to plugs.?

1988 Ford Aerostar gets 11v from coil but no spark from plugs. Getting gas to engine. Changed distribuitor, rotor, tried a different plug. It happened suddenly one day it was running good then the check engine light came on as it cut off. I tried it a few times with no luck. Sat for 10 minutes tried it again - it ran all the way home. The next morning I tried it again and it just cranks won't turn over since. Rotor spins; serpentine belt turns; there are no points on this model year. Did not change the condensor or wires however using a digital volt meter I could tell there was current present. 11.4v at the battery. It ran good no smoke or backfiring. (I thought about the timing) Some other threads suggested it might be the relay but I can't see how that can be.. Can any one Help?Ford aerostar no fire to plugs.?Have you tried the ignition switch? I have a 2000 Dodge Neon (dont blame me, my wife owned it when I met her) that is running like crap... doesn't want to start, idles rough and acts as though it's going to die, and sometimes makes a popping sound, maybe backfiring, while trying to accellerate... So, i'm thinking i'll change the fuel filter (thats probably never been done), get new spark plugs (the car has over 130000 miles)... maybe new spark plug wires? How often do they need to be changed? • How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?

i have a 1994 ford ranger, 4cly, 5 speed so there is 8 spark plugs and wires.

i was told to junk my truck due to the Piston O rings r shot. since its junk anyway....how can i %26quot;work%26quot; on the engine with my lil tool kit and try to replace them? make my truck run great again like it did 3 months ago and for the last 10 years!!!!

do they actually look like lil rings? will i need 4 ?

i will need to replace the head gasket and the valve cover gasket too?

seals that hold the throttle body down to the intake?

maybe that gasket too? ,should i rebuild the throttle body while im at it????

btw changing out the spark plugs. and all the wires.

how long will this take me? ya i am a girl, been a while since i got my fingers dirty.....thanks and wish me luck. if i mess it up, then i am out a few bucks, and a lil time.,.,,if i dont try then i am not who i say i am!

have a great day and ty for reading either way...How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?LOL. I got a good chuckle out of your question and at most of the answers. no offense, but you know absolutely nothing about engines, except what you have heard repeated from a shade tree mechanic. and neither do most of the people who threw up an answer.

I will not sit here and waste 30 minutes telling you about the intracasies of an internal combustion engine, so bear with me when i give you the shortest answer for your issue.

Your piston rings are located on your pistons (obviously) and this is an internal part. You would have to remove the engine from the car and disassemble the entire motor to replace the piston rings.

Not only, however can you just %26quot;replace the piston rings%26quot; and drive along merrily. You must take that block to a compitent machinist, have it cleaned and checked for cracks or damage, and he will have the final say-so on how much material will have to be removed from the cylinders to %26quot;clean them up%26quot; for new piston rings.

Probably, (and most older engines fall into this category) you can take a worn out block and bore it .020 or .030 over (.030 over is highly common) and install new oversize pistons and rings, then reuse the rods, crank ect (all good reusable parts) and replace all gaskets with new gaskets obviously. You cannot reuse head gaskets, intake gaskets, ect.

I highly recommend you either let a trained professional do the work, or buy another vehicle that doesn't have these issues, because if you attempt to do this yourself, you will be walking, not driving.

You must have quite a bit of miles on that 2.3 engine, as they typically last well over 240,000 miles. If nothing else, and IF you have enough knowledge on the subject, you can pull another 2.3 engine from a mustang, other ranger, or pinto. Those motors are highly common. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?Well they are inside the engine so you need to do a lot of disassembly just to get them out. You would need to replace all the seals and gaskets that you took apart (and since you have everything apart its easy to just take the everything rest apart and make sure everything is fixed/rebuilt not just the obvious problem). This is why its not worth it to fix on such an old truck. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?to replace the piston rings you have to tear the hole engine down. The engine will have to come out of the truck to do this. Each cylinder has three rings on it, two compression rings, and a oil ring. Almost all of the gaskets will have to be replaced. There is no need to rebuild the throttle body. It will take a lot of time. Sorry, but its not worth it.How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?Changing the piston rings is a MAJOR job and cannot be done without removing the engine. Plus, the cylinder will need to be honed as well. This is not a do it yourself type of job.How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?8 plugs so you have 8 pistons and on those pistons you have oil rings and compression rings. if all that,s wrong then your better off to change the motor. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?blast it with pissHow do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?It would take to long to explain everything but here is a little insight. It's a big job that requires allot of precision tools and equipment as well as knowledge. The reciprocating motion of the pistons turns into rotary motion of the crank shaft. This creates friction and heat where the oil comes involved. There are three rings on the piston that stop the oil from entering the combustion chamber. If the rings wear out, you'll have black smoke out of the exhaust and your spark plugs will be oily. The cylinder walls are probably worn out not to mention allot of other things. It's too big a job for most people. Good Luck to you!How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?I dont intend to discourage you but this is a really complicated job for someone with no experience. If you will need the truck anytime soon I highly recommend taking it in for repair.

If you want to keep the truck as a project and work on it as you learn then I would recommend getting a factory service manual and going along at your own pace.

Good Luck! its a lot of fun to be able to work on your own vehicles and you will learn a lot in the process. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?Piston rings go around the piston (the thing that moves up and down) so oil and gas and crap doesn't leak out of the cylinder. They are very difficult to replace because you have to take apart the block. Yes they look like rings, as they go around the round piston. You may as well replace all, yes. You may as well replace the valve gasket while you are at it, because if the rings are fried, then most likely, the valves are going to be leaking. No, I doubt the gasket that holds the throttle body and intake will need to be replaced. It will take you all day, or even two days. Good luck! A Le-mans repair manual like, Haynes or of the same sort, will be very handy!

    94 Honda Accord rotor bolt?

How the hell do you get the bolt off the rotor? It's turned at a bad angle and I can't even see if it's a phillips head, or what. Also, the valve cover gasket is pretty much shot and there's oil in all the spark plug wells, the car should still run, right? It's worked fine up until now, and I know it needs to be fixed, but the car stopped running to day and I changed the plugs, wires, and distributor cap, but I can't get the damn rotor off. I tried restarting the car with the new stuff and the old rotor, but it still won't fire. Hopefully when I get back under the distributor cap the rotor bolt will be a more manageable place. Any other ideas?94 Honda Accord rotor bolt?just get your engine to TDC. (rotor pointing to #1) you can get the screw off from there.

it should be a phillips head.

may also be your ignitor going out.

94 Honda Accord rotor bolt?mark the position of the distributor, and remove the 3 12mm bolts. now you can free spin the rotor to were you can get to it. Also you gotta remove the distributor because that o-ring leaks real bad, you usually replace it when you replace the valve cover. Another reason the car is not starting is the main relay. After you do all the engine work, and the car still will not start. Get a main relay.94 Honda Accord rotor bolt?distributor off tap the engine until the bolt faces the opening and take out. if not break the rotor and make opening with little vise grip take out. u don't have to pull distributor. if no spark try coil most of the time it's a bad coil.

Is it possible for a spark plug head to round?

I went to change a plug and could not remove it.A regular 5/8 spark plug socket would not engage the plug,so using a snake flashlight to look at the exposed end of the spark plug it appears to be completely round....so the socket won't engage the plug.I then took the wire off the sparkplug next to it and it looks identically rounded and it won't engage either...

So is the plug just pushed down too far in the cylinder or is it rounded?I'm thinking it's possibly in far down enough the rounded edge i'm seeing is a different part of the plug above the 6 sided...That seems unlikely but who knows...How can I get the plug out?.... I have a 2000 Toyota Rav4 4 cylinderIs it possible for a spark plug head to round?yes if someone used a cheap socket on it they will round off,you don't see it happening much these days but it can happen,if its in their that tight you will have a hard time removing it,especially with the head of it being rounded off,but its pretty rare these days to see that, sometimes sockets are to thick and wont grab on to the plug try a thinner wall socket that may get it out, good luck with it.Is it possible for a spark plug head to round?I have never seen that. It's not round. The hex part is down in there somewhere.

It comes out the same way it went in, with the same wrench. Is it possible for a spark plug head to round?go to the store and buy a set of plugs that fit your car.. and buy the plug socket that fits that plug.. you will find that you have to push down and turn and then you will feel it grab when you turn the socket.. i had that trouble on a renault.. i recomend a socket and extension and a universal.. with this you will be ok.. 3/8 set ok.Is it possible for a spark plug head to round? You need to remove the air filter holder, you will then need to remove four holders from the center of the valve cover which are held in place with 10mm screws. You will then be able to get your 5/8 socket to fit.Is it possible for a spark plug head to round?Sometimes the rubber insulator on the end of the spark plug wires can come off and stick onto the spark plug. Try taking a coat hanger, bend a small hook on the end of it, and then clip the wire off so there is a REAL small hook-see if you can hook onto the rubber down by the spark plug. happens here in the shop on a daily basis, worse with aftermarket spark plug wires. HINT-once you get it out, glue it back onto the plug wire insulator with yellow weatherstrip glue..Is it possible for a spark plug head to round?possible dirt in the tube is preventing the socket from traveling down far enough? or is the socket not long enough, spark plug sockets come in 2 different lengths. either way, get a magnet to assist getting any dropped item from within the holes.

How to fix a misfire in a 1994 Mercury Cougar XR7?

The check engine light came on, I had it checked and it says that there is a misfire in Cylinder 4. I reset the Check Engine light and it hasn't come back on. I have noticed some odd things in power loss, but it felt more like a weak transmission. Is this normal for a misfire to feel like? As well, I have ALWAYS had the problem where the engine will kind of give me a kick when i'm idling every 5 seconds or so that shakes the car. Is this the misfire? If so, why would the check engine light JUST have come on. I have changed the spark plugs and the wires, my next idea was to check the fuel injector in the cylinder 4. is there any advice you could give me on how to fix this because I really do't have money for another car, so I have to make this one last. How to fix a misfire in a 1994 Mercury Cougar XR7?that kick and shake is definitely a misfire. if you said you replace the spark plugs and wires, before you replace that expensive injector check the distributor cap. on the bottom of the cap are contact points for the rotor. if there is corrosion on the #4 contact this would cause a misfire. the rotor is obviously okay if the other cylinders are not missing. if there is corrosion on the contact replace the cap and rotor and recheck that kick on idle.

As mentioned - sounds like the O2 sensor is not properly talking to the computer. The O2 sensor and temperature sensor are two entirely different sensors. The O2 is in the exhaust stream and measure Oxygen concentration in the exhaust. The temperature sensor measures coolant temperature.Honda '94 Accord LX fails CO% emission test readings! • Issue(s) with '99 Mercury Cougar?

Hey all... I'm new here, and I'm looking forward to meeting you all, and learning from you. With that being said, here's the issue(s) (Sorry if it gets a bit long winded...)

My wife's 99 cougar has been acting up lately. I guess that this has been going on for some time, but she neglected to tell me (I guess she thinks I'm Kreskin and I was supposed to just know it was an issue). Anyways, It's gotten really bad in the past 3 days, when the temperature here dropped well below 0 degrees. The car seemes to start ok, and the RPMs goes up to about 1000, then it falters and stalls out, unless I keep my foot on the gas. When it stalls out, the whole car vibrates very badly. Her check engine light was on (and has been for about 2 years now), so I took my code reader and she had 14 errors. Here's the errors...

    P1507 - IAC Underspeed Error

    p0156 - HO2S Sensor Circuit Malfunction

p0402 - EGR Flow Excessive Detected

p1401 - DPF EGR Sensor Circuit High Voltage Detected

    p1131 - lack of HO2S- switch

    p1151 - lack of HO2S- switch

    p0301-p0306 - cylinder 1-6 misfire

    p0171 - Bank 1 too lean

    p0174 - Bank 2 too lean

I erased the above codes so that I'd know what I had to start with.

I called a friend of mine and he in turned called a friend who used to work on fords/mercury's, and he said to check my Vacuum Advance Tube. Well, in the process of trying to figure out how to disconnect it from the boot after the MAF, I broke the flexible tube, so i went to the nearest Autoparts store and got a piece of tubing. My friend told me to plug up that tube and when I did that, the car seemed to respond back to normal. All indications pointed to some sort of a vacuum leak, since when the brakes are applied it took a little longer to stall out. After stubby-ing in a piece of hose, I still have the problem. Another friend suggested it might be a fuel pump, fuel filter, or maybe some gumming up of the gas lines since she has to park in the street and the fuel lines are setting up against the snow. So earlier today I changed the fuel filter. I was suprised that there was very little gas that spilled out as I installed the new one. This seemed to help the idle and it also seemed to keep the car from stalling out. I also added a can of heet and a fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. The car has 64K miles, so i figured that it was time for new plugs. After changing out the plugs, the idle seemed to be worse. I seemed to be getting some backfires while keeping my foot on the gas and again when the car stalled out. I listened for any vacuum leaks in the engine compartment, and i didn't hear any. I did however hear a very repetitious noise that seemed to coincide with the white markings on the timing belt as it rotated, but that could be nothing. I also bled the brakes in the car, as she said they were getting %26quot;spongy%26quot; and she had a hard time stopping about 75% of the time. I did not notice any air bubbles in the fluid as I was bleeding the brakes. I also noticed a smell similar to burning plastic or rubber, and there is a big hesitation when pressing on the gas from idle. After letting the car run for about 3-4 minutes, the Check Engine Light came on, and I read the code again. This time it was P0300 (Random multiple Cylinder Misfire). I quintuple checked that I had all the spark plug wires in the correct positions. Although I did the plugs one at a time so I wouldn't get them mixed up.

So here's what I gathered from different forums for possible causes. Please tell me which ones I should just disregard as gobbledy-**** and which ones have some merit...

    1. Fuel Pump (Title says it's a 99, but door tag says it was built on 6/10/98, so I'm not sure if the recall would apply.)

    2. EGR valve stuck open and/or EGR solenoid valve clogged (most likely by the foam gasket)

    3. Bad Idle Air Control Valve

    4. Bad Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE)

    5. leak in vacuum hose somewhere in engine compartment

    6. Plugged/Semi-plugged Fuel line

    7. Air inlet plugged (I assume they meant somewhere after the MAF)

I've done a lot of searching on several forums, and it seems that several people are having similar problems. However, it seems that everyone has a different answer for fixing the problem.

Please leave your comments and/or if you have another idea. (Telling me I'm a complete moron is acceptable... lol )

How much to fix 97 ford taurus tranny issues?

I need the following things done to my car.

transmission pan?? gasket i think it is called-it is the big gasket that goes along the transmission pan

i also need a flush and fill which is obvious since i have to drain the fluid to put the gasket in

i need any tranny related filters changed

i also need spark plugs and maybe wires replaced

    how much for everything?

thanks in advanceHow much to fix 97 ford taurus tranny issues? The trans will cost around $100 with gasket and filter, a flush is not recommended, it is a waste if they use a additive to do it, stay away from it. Plugs and wires usually around $120 to $150, here at our shop anywaysHow much to fix 97 ford taurus tranny issues? The gasket on these is reusable you might just need to tighten it . Or you have bad axle seal . If you do want to change fluid and filter unless you have the machine to flush and fill your only gonna change about 4 to 5 quarts max . There is one filter . So if you do 5 quarts of fluid figure $25 for that . Filter and Gasket about $30 . Plugs platinium only $3 to $5 single tip only = $18 to $30 . Plug wires $40 so your looking at around $120 total with tax if you do it yourself .

How possible is it that water could have caused a spark to jump and short out my ECU?

89 S10 4.3 220k. My truck ran fine before I decided to powerwash the engine. After I washed it It wouldn't start. When I did get it started, it was misfiring badly and would backfire out of the intake. The plugs and wires I changed at the last oil change. I tried replacing the distributor cap, rotor and the pickup coil. I also had the Ignition module tested and it tested good. I tested the coil with an ohmmeter and it was good as well. Could a spark have jumped into the wiring harness and zapped my computer? How possible is it that water could have caused a spark to jump and short out my ECU?No.. you forced water into the plug wires with the pressure washer and it's cross firing between two cylinders.... plug wires are designed to keep water out at atmospheric pressure, not at 3200psiHow possible is it that water could have caused a spark to jump and short out my ECU?No.How possible is it that water could have caused a spark to jump and short out my ECU?The ecu is not at fault. Don't power wash your engine. If you are lucky it will dry out after it runs for a while and warms up.How possible is it that water could have caused a spark to jump and short out my ECU?Not likely.......It's probably water somewhere in one of the connectors, you might want to carefully disconnect them one by one, and replace the dielectric grease

in them, you can also try clean, compressed air. I personally have

never heard this happening but I guess there's always a first if it is

the ECU....But being it's such an expensive item to replace, I would

    try all other options first.

Good Luck to you..How possible is it that water could have caused a spark to jump and short out my ECU?the difference between the coil secondary and any other system in that car is just too much. even if the spark could wander to the computer it would lack the power to do any damage. allot of us agree that your problem is simply just wet ignition system. dry it out and retry.

    Triton V10 Tune-Up?

How do I perform a tune up for 2004 Triton V10?

The reason I wish to so this myself is because I am living in a 2004 Fleetwood Fiesta 32s and I do not like moving my home to a shop and also where would I wait? This is my home.

    I wish to:

    Change the oil

    New spark plugs

    New wires

Any other suggestions are appreciated.Triton V10 Tune-Up?This vehicle is not require to change spark plug for 60K miles ( it used platinum plug) and it also have DIS (Direct Ignition System) coil on plug. Require special tools to remove spark plugs. So unless you get to that milage don't do it.

As for doing oil change your self it very simple only thing to remember is not to over tighten your drain plug.

Was I charged too much for a tune up and coil pack?

-Hello, My 1999 Camaro had random cylinders misfiring. I got a tune up and had the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and fuel filter changed. I was charged 280 dollars.

-I drove around with the car a bit and the check engine light came on. Cylinder 6 was misfiring. I went back and had the coil pack changed. He charged me 200 dollars.

-The car is fine now, but do you think 480 dollars for a tune up plus coil pack too much? Please consider the labor and how hard the Camaro is to get at.Was I charged too much for a tune up and coil pack?A lot of us have paid, but that is the way works. Many shops have rates that seem high but they usually post them. Each time you enter the shop you pay a Minimum Charge no matter what plus Standard Add On things. If he would have done the whole job the first visit it may have been a little less. That should have been considered in the second charge. Was I charged too much for a tune up and coil pack?i think it's pretty close because think about it when they get the parts there is almost always a markup in price then diagnostics and labor it's fair.unless it is a v-6 engine then it's high. Was I charged too much for a tune up and coil pack? The coils are very expensive,I think the price was very cheap.

Yes they are easy to fit,but they are still expensive. Was I charged too much for a tune up and coil pack?there is no such thing as a tune upWas I charged too much for a tune up and coil pack?plugs about $15.00, Good wires about $30+, fuel filter about 10 bucks, coil pack about $40. all of these are easy to get to on a 3800 v6. cap and rotor about 25 bucks.

Obviously they didnt scan the car if you had to come back for a #6 misfire, which the scan would have seen.

A OBD2 cheap code reader, about 70 bucks, chiltons manual about 25 bucks, a spark plug gapper about 1 dollar. Learning to do it yourself....priceless. Yes, 480 is toooooooo much. The coil pack has 2-3 leads and 2 nuts.....hmmmm 150 to install?? yeah right!!!!

expert tunes tried to pull this on my girlfriend. Told her that the car still had the original coil pack and it was defective. I had changed the coil pack 2 weeks earlier. Its amazing that they diagnosed that with out the use of the data link, which i had tucked away and relocated when i installed her new stereo and they had yet to open the hood too. She only went in for an oil change (because i was out of town). Oh, if they supplied the parts, i'd bet they got the cheap stuff and charged you a premium price for them. I know they gotta make money, but thats highway robbery. Was I charged too much for a tune up and coil pack?Overcharged for the coil packs, but about right on the tune-up. 2 of the plugs are nearly impossible to get at yourself, therefor your kind of at the mercy of the repair shop. The coil packs are very simple to change and easily accessable. Do it yourself for under $100 for all 3.

On the flip side- I've done both for my 99' V6 RS several times... and I still get cylinder misfires... not sure what's causing the coils to go bad, but it seems every 6-8 months I'm replacing one or more. just FYI...

    95 Ford Escort Problems?

so i have a 95 ford escort that i have had for about 6 months. There has been some problems lately with it. When i would push the petal down to try and speed it up it wouldn't. it would sound like it was flooding the engine and i was only getting around 11mpg. So i first had a new catalytic converter put on that didn't do anything. Then i changed the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, wires, cal-pac module and still didn't help it. So then the timing belt was change and then finally a new fuel pump was put on and for about 2 days it was running better than before it went downhill. So about 3 days after the fuel pump was put in the check coolant light came on and i didn't think of anything and filled it up how high i was suppose to. After that it smelled like it was running hot when i went to go get a friend. When i got to his house my car just died on me and now won't even start. It sounds like its not getting any gas and doesn't want to start. What should i do? I need to know asap.95 Ford Escort Problems? To properly diagnose I'd have to look at it, but you might try checking the oil level to start. I know simple but look at the oil itself, is it cloudy or milky? If it's cloudy or looks milky it could be a sign of a blown water jacket(cracked block) Personal opinion due to the age and make I would guess it's a blown head gasket. The next step is to pull your spark plugs one at a time and check each one for burning or rust, if you find rust or moisture on the plug tip you are getting H2O into your system and it's time to retire the vehicle.

Good luck, I hope I'm wrong.95 Ford Escort Problems?I would get a compression test on the head. It sounds like you could be weeping from the head gasket. It could also be a timing issue, but if you've had new belts fitted, they should have set it up properly for you as part of the job.95 Ford Escort Problems?my best advice is just get what ever money you can for it, I had a 2002 escort, and i did some work on it, (not as much as you though) my issue was every time i went to a stop light or stop sigh it would idle really high then go so low that it would stall out. no one could really tell me why, so i just traded it in and got a 06 chevy malibu. best thing i did. but some one did tell me to get the computer checked out. i wish you the best of luck, get it started and dump it!95 Ford Escort Problems?HOLLY COW!

You could have bought another one with the cost of all the parts you replaced......

Go buy a 1990s Chevy Camaro and throw that pile of junk away.95 Ford Escort Problems?First, you call a junk yard.

Second, you ask them to come to your house

Last, you tell them to tow that piece of junk away!95 Ford Escort Problems?Seems likeyou put a lot of money into the car right after you got it.

Its a 95 and thats OBD1 and it is possible to get any trouble codes out of it without a scanner. some websites will tell you how to do it.

Here are just some possibles, etc.

Get a spray can of starting fluid and a friend.

You open the hood and spray some of it thru the breather. have the friend try to start it. If you get any sort of ' pop ' or ' cough ' then you know you have spark but its not getting fuel.

It coulod be an EGR valve that is stuck open,,, you could have two thermostat sensors and only changes one,,, etc.95 Ford Escort Problems? Before you call the junk yard. Do this.... I know that you already changed out the wires. But follow your coil wire to the coil. Get a hand sprayer on your coil pack or coil and crank this over with someones help. Look for the arching from the coil. This sounds like the coil has gone bad...

Good luck95 Ford Escort Problems?it might be the fuel pump regulator, not letting enough gas into the injectors. also check to see how dirty the throttle body is, it might not letting it get enough air.

It is a pure case of mechanic mal-practice. You got ripped off.

Considering all you have said above I don't think we can solve this on the interenet. You better find a competent auto mechanic. Someone who knows what he is doing could have this figured out in short order. Try the Ford dealer.95 Ford Escort Problems? One thing is you didn't mention when changing the catalytic converter that you changed the oxygen sensor and the O2 sensor should of been replaced bec it caused the catalytic converter to go more then likely.

First off is it trying to turn over at all , second is there spark , 3rd is there gas, 4th you over heating it may of caused the electrical to get wet and that's why it's resistant to start.

Hope that helps and best of luck , by the way I'd be checking that rad ,rad roses , thermostat area and under the car to see if any antifreeze is leaking.95 Ford Escort Problems?I'm gonna take a shot in the dark as I think you covered about everything except one , Go out and pull you dip stick , any oil? How about any water, sounds to me as though the engine is blown. Head gasket blew or no oil if neither of these ,,,look on the ground for oil , I dont want to sound mean but I think it sounds like a blown engine.. Wish ya Luck ,I have a 1993 that I use to scoot around in when I dont drive the truck.

If a starter turns can it still be faulty?

I have been having problems with my 89' S-10. I took the starter off, the teeth looked good on both the starter and the fly wheel, and the starter turns when atempting to start the truck. Can the starter still be faulty?

Hear is the run down of what's been up.

When I turn the key the engin turns, but fails to start. Every so often it acks like it will start but dosen't. So I changed the plugs, and it worked for a week or two. At that point I changed the plug wires, cap, rotor button and checked the fuses. I made shure to put every thing back together the way it had came off. it started and I drove to work and back, and now ti dosn't start at all. At this point I take the distributer cap back off inspect it put it back on.... nothing. My next step is checking for fuel and spark. it's getting fuel and spark, how ever the spark from the coil is white, and the spar from the plugs are reddish orange. The battery seems too have a good charge. And now I am at a loss of what to do.If a starter turns can it still be faulty? The above answers are all pretty good. I, however, believe you may have a faulty coil. Because it sparks and has fuel, and sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't, I think you may have a weak coil or at least a bad connection somewhere in the coil wiring system. Another possibility is engine compression is too low.If a starter turns can it still be faulty?its mechanic time, tell him (or her)what you have done so far, and its not the starterIf a starter turns can it still be faulty?if your starter works then the battery has still got some charge left in it.

if you notice sparks then i guess the ignition system is fine.

have you tried checking the carburetor?

have the cylinders checked for compression leaksIf a starter turns can it still be faulty?check your firing order of the plugwires also chech and make sure that the pickup coil is not damaged. If a starter turns can it still be faulty? Two quite different symptoms may be noticed in a car that refuses to start. If the engine will not fire when the starter motor turns it over, the fault must be in the ignition or the fuel supply. But if the starter motor itself does not function, the fault must be in the motor or its associated electrics.

It is likely that the fault is not with the starter motor itself but with the power supply system. To check this possibility, in cases where there is no response when the starter is operated, begin again and turn the key one position to put it into the ignition on position. The ignition warning light should come on and the fuel gauge register. If they do not no power is leaving the battery. This will be because the battery is flat or the connections at the terminals are at fault.

    Flat Battery.

If the headlights or any other major power consumer have been left on for any length of time, the battery will become completely flat and must be recharged before the engine can be started in the normal way.

    Faulty Battery Post Connections.

If the battery itself is in order, the loss of power may be caused by faulty connections between the battery and the starter. The 榩ost?connections on top of the battery are always suspect. In extreme conditions ?icy weather for example ?a starter motor can take 400 amps to turn the engine over. Any faulty connection will prevent such currents from flowing, but may nevertheless pass the much smaller currents demanded by the ignition lights.

A quick clue as to the condition of the connections can be had by touching the positive terminal of the battery, marked +, immediately after you try to start the car. If it feels hot, the connection is poor.

Corrosion may have begun on the inside of the clamp, on the post or both. A quick whisk with some sandpaper will restore the surface condition of both.

Battery clamps often become slightly oval inside due to corrosion. So when you replace the clamp try to place it in a slightly different position so that it presents a fresh face to the post.

With the 榟elmet?type of connection, a screw through the top locks the connection in place. If it has worked loose tighten it, but if this reduces no result, remove the screw, lift off the 榟elmet?and clean it and the post with emery paper.

If the battery connection will not come away from the post after it has loosened, trickle hot water over it. Never try to pull or twist it free as this risks cracking the battery case.

    Faulty Battery Cables.

If you can find nothing wrong with the battery connections, next check the battery cables. The braided metal lead to the earth connection is especially suspect because corrosion can creep along it attacking individual strands of wire until those remaining cannot carry the starting load. It is easy to be misled by an apparently sound lead as the corrosion often affects only the underside. Lift the lead so you can check it all round and if faulty replace it.

The earth connection on the body of the car should also be examined since rust can set up on the nut and bolt connection. Undo the connection, clean its faces with emery cloth and bolt it back into place. The area of metal around the bolt may also need cleaning.

The insulated live lead from the battery tends not to suffer from corrosion as much as the earth lead does, but an overfilled cell or a fine crack in the battery case can allow acid to escape, settle on the lead and work its way under the insulation. To test for problems in this area bend the lead to and fro several times. If it is corroded you will feel the grating of the fractured wires ?a sign that it must be replaced.

Turn the ignition key to the first position again and if the ignition light fails to come on try the horn and headlamps. If none work, the battery is completely flat. If the battery is providing power try to start the engine again.

If there is still no sign of life in the starter motor and the lights do not dim when you try to start the car, it is clear no power is reaching the starter. When the starter motor turns it drains off power from the lights and causes them to dim. So if the motor fails to turn and the lamps remain bright there are two possible faults. Either power is not reaching the starter motor or the motor itself is defective. If a starter turns can it still be faulty?Your problem is in the distributor. In 89-90 GM distributor had a habit of going bad. Look for a used one. Mark the position of the rotor, loosen the bolt and after pulling it out, put the new in the same way.

You can also check resistance by checking the stator to ground. GM recommends that before checking the car to depress the brake pedal with the key off in order to cut down on electrical resistance. I know that part sounds dumb but it's true.

The impressive performance can be observed off-roads

A less vicious engine oil may help like a new oil filter

A new air filter can help

A thicker spark plug wire can help only id the existing one is faulty

Omitting the side electrode is sure to better spark horsepower

Super-charger/Turbo-charger does help improve power output, but advertisements/gimmicks or other fuel saving devices may not help

!!!!!!please someone help with my car!!!!!!!!?

alright,1993 oldsmobile cutlass SUPREME 3.1...the car has no patterns really but when driving it (when it wants) the rpms lets say will be at 3 grand and it will start bouncing below like its tring to stall but not at high rpms, give it some gas and it'll stop for a second then start again it will do it at low rpms too.and lately it has wanted to stall out at a stop, but not all the time,i have changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, and and oil change...My car was throwing a code for o2 sensor, egr valve,iac...so i took the egr valve and cleaned it inside and out it was pretty bad, noticed that going into the plentum that the hole was almost closed shut with carbon so i decided to take the plentum off and clean all of it inside, put it back on and cleared the memory.and dumped as instructed some sea foam in the booster and the tank, the car seems to run alot smoother and the codes are not signaling anything, drove it around and it started doing it again just not as bad,but runs smoother. My mechanic says that he thinks it is the module, maybe a coil pack.can anyone tell me what their opinions are.if it is one of the two which 1 would be most likely the culprit, and or how do i check to see, cause if its not acting up seems that you couldn't check it.i have a voltage meter,i am going to check the plugs and wires in the morning to see if the egr and intake made the plugs foul out...sorry for such a long story but figured if i told all then it could eliminate any question..thanx in advance!!!!!!please someone help with my car!!!!!!!!?I would agree it's the ignitor module or coil primaries and/or circuits. This is why it effects your tacho.

I've even known faulty tachos back feed into a primary circuit to cause a misfire.!!!!!!please someone help with my car!!!!!!!!?I'd check your plugs and engine wires first. Check your hosing to make sure there are no holes anywhere. Whats the battery like? I can't help you too much with modules. Could be a radiator issue? What have you done with that?!!!!!!please someone help with my car!!!!!!!!?sounds like a faulty mass air flow sensor so the ecu is not able to give the right amount of fuel through the injectors or a faulty throttle position switch!!!!!!please someone help with my car!!!!!!!!?Check the throttle position sensor.!!!!!!please someone help with my car!!!!!!!!?Your fuel Pump is going. Sometimes they go all at once, sometimes it takes a while especially if you use gas tretment. Will eat electric fuel pumps up.

How can i tell if my car DOESNT have a distributor ?

I need help with my 1988 Milano Verde!?

I just received a 1988 Milano Verde from my Uncle as a gift. I have recently changed the spark plugs, put in a new battery, and the car is in almost new condition. It looks immaculate, I will put up pictures as soon as I get a digital camera. But I am having problems ever since my dad and I took off the distributor cap and rotor. We put the cap and rotor back on and ever since, I can start the car but it stops running no more than 2 seconds together. If anyone has any advice as what to look for or if you had the same problem, please tell me what was wrong with your car and how you fixed it.

Also, I am in need of a new clutch and I would like to have an official service and repair manual. SO if you know of any websites that I can order those from, please, feel free to throw in your two cents. Thank you in advance to everyone that offers up help.

I received the car, this past Labor Day. My dad took it out after we towed it home, Minnesota to Wisconsin. He took it out for maybe 10 minutes at a time, twice. He drove it hard and fast. When he came back from his second Speed Racer stinge the car was very hot. So we put it in the garage and left it alone. Then the next day my dad brought home some coolant, and power steering fluid(since it was almost completely out) and he showed me the distributor cap and rotor by taking it apart but when we put it back together we didn't attempt to start it since we didn't have a battery that would work without jumper cables. Today I bought a battery, installed it correctly, and then we put in new spark plugs. The plug wires did Not get crossed, they are number 1 through 6. But the wires are in poor condition and I hope to replace them soon. I am planning on replacing the cap and rotor tomorrow. I just don't get how the car ran fine a few days ago and then we took apart the cap and rotor and then next time we try to start it it starts and dies with in 2 secondsI need help with my 1988 Milano Verde!?First, congratulations! One of the best driving cars of all time! Before you start anything CLEAN THE GROUNDS! That will save you plenty of headache in the future. Then, after cleaning the grounds, rewire the grounds from for the tail lights. The starting and dying is because it is running off of the cold start injector. You need to check the fuel relay (black box on the passenger side firewall with two plugs connecting on the bottom). If you pull the black cover off of the AFM (air fuel meter) and move the arm with the ignition on you should hear the relay click and you should also hear the fuel pump come on. At the very least you should hear the fuel pump. Usually you will also see the the return line from the fuel regulator jump a bit because of the fuel going through. If you do not have either of those that means you are not getting fuel and need a new relay which is fairly common and most owners of these cars will keep spares. Since the car is running I can assume you are getting proper spark so check the relay first. I have also had a bad ground in my ECU but that caused the same problem, but the relay is usually the cause. For the clutch you can try Centerline Alfa (Centerlinealfa.com) or International Auto Parts (international-auto.com). They should have your relay too. Another good resource is Alfabb.com. There are some very knowledgeable members on there and it is free. Most of the time you will get timely responses which makes it a powerful tool. If you are not good with a wrench you soon will be. These cars need attention regularly, but they reward you for it. You can also contact me directly and I will help where I can. I have more than enough Alfa experience to see you through most issues. Hope this helped.

  • Check engine light is on, not blinking and burning smell when accelerate?

I have a 2001 volkswagen jetta and the check engine light came on last night and stayed on. I immediately went to an autozone to have them give me a code and they pulled up P420, and it followed with something about the catalytic converter. Today and I went out and drove the car and when accelerating I smell a burning smell, cant make out what kind of burning smell. I recently had the wires and spark plugs changed and I have oil. My gas cap is tight, yadda yadda.

My question is that, could it really be the catalytic converter, if it is, can I drive around with a bad one without damaging my engine, just for a while until I get $$$ but if it must be repaired ASAP, how much does a catalytic converter cost on this car.

A knowledgeable mechanic that knows about Volkswagens would be helpful.

Thanks A Bunch in advanceCheck engine light is on, not blinking and burning smell when accelerate?yes it is a catalytic converter especially if it is a sulfur smell. I ve had this problem with my truck. No it wont do any damage to your engine just make your car smell a little funny. the Prices vary all depending if you want to upgrade or not. the price is any where from 50 to 100 dollars for stock. NO serious damage will come of this from not replacing right away.Check engine light is on, not blinking and burning smell when accelerate?I think you mean PO420%26quot; Catalyst efficiency below threshold%26quot;. It does not mean that you need to replace the cat necessarily but you do need to do some diagnostic work. Sounds like your fuel mixture is not within limits. If you have a mechanic that has a factory level scan tool go see him. It will be worth paying for a system specific scan for your piece of mind and save from unnecessary component damage.Check engine light is on, not blinking and burning smell when accelerate?i had the same type of problem, i found out the vac-hoses were bad and cracked and no good , i replaced them and the sensers and it really smelled bad for about 2 weeks as it was burning of the old junk that had builot up in the converter,, try the hoses an vac-lines ,Check engine light is on, not blinking and burning smell when accelerate?Give Lloyd 10 points.

You can replace the cat all you want, but you aren't fixing the real cause of the problems.

Thankfully, OBD2 is generic and this only takes diagnostic skills and common sense.

Thanks A Bunch in advanceCheck engine light stays on?The P0420 code indicates the catalytic converter efficiency is below the minimum threshold. This could mean a defective catalyst or it could be a bad O2 sensor (upstream or downstream). The offset of the sensor could be that it appears to the computer that the catalyst is bad.

You should have this tested at a reputable shop that can graph the O2 data and determine if the O2 sensors are good... if so, then you will need a catalytic converter, but i the sensors are offset or sluggish, you mat get by with a sensor replacement.

As for the smell, this should be identified ASAP... this may indicate the catalyst is getting too hot and might be heating up the body panels (i,e, floorboard)...Check engine light stays on?http://www.autozone.com/R,365733/vehicleCheck engine light stays on?go to a junkyard and find the converter. That would be the cheapest place. You may want to bring some tools, maybe a hacksaw.Check engine light stays on?I dont have the codes for VW but chances are it is the O2 sensor which needs to be changed

What concerns me more is the smell that you talked about. If it has a rotten egg smell this could be either the catalytic convertor or your battery if your alternator is over charging it can make your battery boil and the acid is what you may be smelling or the convertor could be plugged causeing the smell

a burnt rubber smell could be the brakes or if a standard trans can be the clutch

Burnt oil smell,, bad leak some where burnt plastic smell could be a short in the wire harness

My point being have the smell tracked down

    Good Luck

Can this hose thing cause a vacuum leak?

ok i own a saturn sl1, like the one in the video im goin to show you, now i was messing with it today cuz it has been running wierd and everybody said it sounds like a bad vacuum leak,

things that doin wierd stuff on my car

when start, goes up to 3000 rpm and does down slow,

when in drive or %26quot;r%26quot; while your foot is on the brake it shacks, idles lowish, and sometimes just acts wierd, also check engine light is on and flash's alot,

i replaced the oxygen senor, the fuel pump and filter, spark plugs with spark plug wires, i am changing out the coil friday,

now here is my question, i think!!

ok on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYa8rcHeN3A is a guy wth a saturn like myne, ok see from 0:15 to 0:20 on the video how he puts his hand on that black thing and follows it up, now were that black hose it hooked on the throttle body, and the end of the black hose, on 0:20 that end was melted and i thin that is a vacuum leak right? the black end peace is melted and there is a opening, so im guessing that a vacuum leak? thank you guysCan this hose thing cause a vacuum leak?Hi

What you have is an intake air leak, and it is bypassing the airflow meter and causing the problems you are having.

    Very best regards

GeordieCan this hose thing cause a vacuum leak?yes we know all that stuff and another thing that,s a good way to catch the engine on fire if the engine is hot too. any hose that,s drawing vacuum there could be a vacuum leak if the hose or metal tube has a leak in it.

2002 BUICK REGAL LS, NOT SUPERCHARGED WITH A 3800 MOTOR....CAR WON'T START BUT WILL TURN OVER AND CRANK.?

Hi, I have a serious problem. I have a 2002 buick regal ls, with a 3800 motor. Hope that helps....My car willnot start. It cranks but wont start up, trying to start I ran down the battery and bought a new 1 and still no. I have recently got a 02 sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump, mass air flow sensor and lastly a fuel pressure regulator. Also had a minor tune up, i had the wires and spark plugs changed. Now car was towed to mechanic and he said spark plugs not getting spark, what??? I need some serious help, short on cash, spent 1, 000$ already on car for past problems and car worst. No service engine light on. My car use to just be hard to start up after it sat awhile and when it do it would shut off on me while driving, no matter where or how fast i was going. Now I came out and car just wont start at all. Mechanic sparyed engine with starter fluid and still nothing so the fuel problem is ruled out. PLEASE HELP.....CAN'T AFFORD FOR MECHANICS TO GUESS ON MY CAR, ALREADY COST ME ENOUGH SO FAR DOING THAT AND CAR EVEN WORSE. THANKS IN ADVANCE.2002 BUICK REGAL LS, NOT SUPERCHARGED WITH A 3800 MOTOR....CAR WON'T START BUT WILL TURN OVER AND CRANK.?Its funny how no one jumps on the hard questions.

The electrical system is very difficult and complicated to diagnose. I've seen the main connectors on the underside of the fuse box loosen up enough to make the engine not start. It could also be the crank sensor, cam sensor, ignition control module,or any number of power wires or grounds. I could write for an hour and not be able to get your engine running. Your best bet,if your going to tackle this yourself,is to go to the parts store and buy a repair manual for your car.Sorry and Good Luck.

98 corolla rough idle, no. 2 cylinder, getting spark, clogged injector?

Hello, I pulled the plug wires one by one, no change in idle with no. 2 cylinder, could hear it sparking with wire pulled. Could it be a clogged injector? Could the fuel filer be clogged, and the bypass is letting junk into the throttle body? Any ideas on how much to fix? Thanks for all of your help, John98 corolla rough idle, no. 2 cylinder, getting spark, clogged injector?Or it could be valves %26quot;jacked%26quot; in that cylinder.98 corolla rough idle, no. 2 cylinder, getting spark, clogged injector?Vacuum leak? (little hose came off?)

Fouled/burned spark plug? Remove the spark plug. It's a lot cheaper and easier than an injector.

If the engine runs fine while driving, but idles like crap, it's more likely it's a vacuum leak.

Look and listen for a high pitched sucking noise.98 corolla rough idle, no. 2 cylinder, getting spark, clogged injector?if your getting fire from the plug wire, then take the plug out and clean it, or replace it, the plug might not be firing, or theres not enough fire coming through the wire.98 corolla rough idle, no. 2 cylinder, getting spark, clogged injector?could be a clogged injector, or the injector is not even working. that is the most probable cause because it is limited to just that one cylinder.98 corolla rough idle, no. 2 cylinder, getting spark, clogged injector?could be a bad spark plug, could be a bad injector only two options on this.

    good luck

  • How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville?

Was previously having difficulty starting the car. I'd start the car up and then it would immediately shut off. Start the car a 2nd time and give it the gas, the car would run fine. Yesterday on the way to work, car broke down and won't restart at all. I put gas in it. Car also had tune up and oil change 2 months ago and spark plug wires were also changed out. So this is why I'm thinking it's the fuel pump. The car has a 4.5 liter V8 in it. How much is it to replace the fuel pump? How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville?Parts and labor on the fuel pump plus draining the tank will be around $405.00 dollars.......

Replacement of the fuel filter will be around $35.00 dollars....

The fuel filter is located near the frame in front of the rear wheel on the drivers side of the vehicle......How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville?OH ME OH MY. LETS NOT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH. WITH PARTS AND LABOR PROBABLY BETWEEN 2 AND 3 HUNDRED DOLLARS.How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville?try replacing the fuel filter first. If it is blocked it will starve the engine of gas. Typically the fuel pressure builds and you notice herky jerky acceleration. How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville? To have it replaced at an independent repair shop it should be around $213.00. At a dealership it will cost around $296.00. While your having this done, have the fuel filter changed also. Most fuel pump warranties require it. Hope this helps.

95 3.4 v6 fuel injection camaro doesnt start right up?

tried getting codes checked but no one can get it to work - its been like this for a long time you have to turn it over for 20 sec or so then wait to hear the fuel pump stop and then turn it over again...i have changed the fuel filter, pcv, spark plugs, wires and air filter - i think its a sensor or something but if i cant check the codes how do i know which part is bad?95 3.4 v6 fuel injection camaro doesnt start right up?Check the fuel pressure regulator, there is a vacuum line going to it. If there is fuel coming out of there, replace it! Does the scanner power up?? Is the check engine light on when the car is running?? If not you have a basic fuel concern, do a fuel pressure check.95 3.4 v6 fuel injection camaro doesnt start right up?Sounds like it takes a while to build fuel pressure. Maybe a weak fuel pump that drains overnight or when sitting a while. Put a fuel pressure guage on it and see if it holds pressure or if it drops a lot.95 3.4 v6 fuel injection camaro doesnt start right up?Start with the cheapest and simplest and go from there. Sounds to me like one or more of your coil packs may be dead or dieing. Cheap and easy to replace. ($5.00 - $10.00 at a junk yard and much cheaper than basically all of the sensors.) Good luck!95 3.4 v6 fuel injection camaro doesnt start right up?sounds like its loosing pressure. have the gas cap checked to see if its good and you might try to find out if the fuel pump regulator is working good.

    1996 dodge intrepid 3.3L?

i changed the spark pulgs wire. the car started but then after i drove for about 5 miles the engin start shaking then it stops. could not start the car again,, when it cooled off it started fine, buth then when it get hot its off again then it will start after it cools off.. does that sound like a bad coil (not sure of the name i am talking about the box where the other side of the spark plugs wire connects too. cos its seems to me i am not getting current at time and thats way it will not start ... also how do i know its the coil and its not the wire that is delivering juice to the coil .. thats if i am even on the right track...1996 doge intrepid 3.3 l?JG, First thing to do is: turn the key on/off, on/off, on and leave key in on position. On the dash it will flash out a stored code. The code will repeat its self 3x. If your not sure just turn the key off and start again. This may help to narrow down the problem. E-mail back with code. Good Luck TW1996 doge intrepid 3.3 l?Sounds like the coil. There are coil testers but you can just grab the mail coil wire and if you do not get a painful jolt it means the coil is weak.

How do i tell if my engine is backfiring or misfiring ?

i recently changed my spark plugs, rotor, wires, and distributor cap. once i finished installing every ting,i started the car and when i step on the accelerator, the car jerks, then returns back to normal operation. when i look under thee hood and have some one step on the gas, when the car misfires or backfires, there is white/gray smoke that comes out of the driver side of the carburetor area ! the car does this every time i step on the gas, it isn't continuous, its more of on and off when i press the gas pedal.

what is my problem and how do i fix it ?How do i tell if my engine is backfiring or misfiring ?just a real simple 5 minute diagnosis for back firing is double check your high tension lines. are they going from the correct tower to the correct plug. also insure that they are firmly seated on the tower and the plug. something commonly overlooked is did you make sure you placed the wires back in their looms so as to not let them arc against something metal. electricity will always take the shortest path to ground. if one of these wires can discharge its spark by arcing, easier than firing the plug, it will. this will sound like a taser going off. %26quot;zap zap zap zap%26quot;.

WARNING: do your checking with the car off. this will save you from getting the beeejeeebers shocked outta you! and the embarrassment of your friend laughing at you while you dance around the yard glowing!

if you are absolutely sure you have the correct wires on the correct towers and plugs, then you have a problem other than this one.How do i tell if my engine is backfiring or misfiring ?If the change came after your work, go back and check all your work. Unless you do the plug wires one at a time, there's a chance some could have been switched. Make sure the engine is timed right: It sounds like yours is firing while an intake valve isn't fully closed..

I once replaced the distributor cap on a '72 Dodge Colt. It wouldn't start afer that. I checked the timing and it was 40 deg off. I compared the old cap with the new one and discovered they were different- the new one had the connectors that far off.. Repositioning the distributor corrected the problem. How do i tell if my engine is backfiring or misfiring ?It could be that, you could also have a pin sized hole in the head gasket, i'd get that **** into a garage and look at the gasket and engine block for holes. How do i tell if my engine is backfiring or misfiring ?You probably mixed up the firing order putting it back together. You may also want to time it.How do i tell if my engine is backfiring or misfiring ?If it was ok before, then you have two plug wires crossed up. A v8 will hide this at idle, but it will run like crap as soon as you try to put load on the engine. Gm V8 firing order is 18436572. Look on the intake just in front of the carb and it will be shown in raised letters cast into the intake. If you didn't pull the distributor out of the engine, then the #1 plug wire should be the left tower on the dist cap while facing it from the front of the car.The distributor turns right hand (clock wise). The cylinders are odds on the drivers side,1357, and even on the pass side 2468, from the front. Retrace your plug wires. I guarantee you got 5+7 crossed up. Easy mistake even pros make now and then. The cylinder numbers are cast into the intake also, right near where the intake meets the heads. Some of the older gms had the plug wire numbers embossed into the plastic retainer ring that hold the plug wire down on the dist cap.(the ring you threw out, because the after market wire didn't fit it)How do i tell if my engine is backfiring or misfiring ?timing is off and the engine is backfiring through the intake valves. did you loosen or mess with the distributer? if not then recheck that you dont have either some switched spark plug wires or they were installed one hole off in rotation (i doubt this one) when the timing is set to far out the spark plugs fire before the intake valve has clsed causing the back fire you described exhaust bangs are due to the exhast valve open during the spark. if the wires are all correct in the holes and on the plugs than you must bring the motor up to top dead center on the crank shaft pully (tdc) or zero degreas advance or retatd on the crank, then lift the distributor cap and see if the pointer is aimed at #1 spark plug contact in the distributor cap. at his point it should be if its pointed directly accross then you must turn the motor 1 turn to the next time the tdc mark is lined up. now the pointer should be close. turn the distributer base to line up the cap and the pointer to #1 plug. this should stop the backfires now you simply need to gently turn the distributer till the pointer matches the line on the timing marks your engine calls for usually 6 to 8 degrees advance or so.

Should I replace the pick up coil?

What should I check if my truck is jumping like it isn't getting fuel? I have changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, spark plugs, spark wires, and the distributor cap. Some one told me that it may be the pick up coil or ignition coil. What would the symptoms of this be and how can I tell if it needs to be replaced?Should I replace the pick up coil?could be plugged catalytic converter. maybe intake leak. probably should clean the carbuerator or throttle body with carb/choke cleaner.Should I replace the pick up coil?take the coil or pickup coil to a parts house and they can check it for youShould I replace the pick up coil?year of auto really helps

my email is openShould I replace the pick up coil?It depends what vehicle, and how old it is,etc.Yes,your pick up coil could do this,as could the ignition coil.So could a bad gas cap and fuel pressure regulator.Should I replace the pick up coil?have you checked the timing?Should I replace the pick up coil?what make and model and engine? it could be a flat cam? does it do it under a load? idle?

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO ADD G MODELS. PLEASE DISCARD CORPORATE BULLETIN 67-65-38 (SECTION 6E--ENGINE FUEL AND EMISSION). ________________________________________?br>

SUBJECT: DTC 32 AND/OR POOR DRIVEABILITY CONDITIONS (INSTALL NEW MEMCAL AND CLEAR ALL DTCS) **NON-OBDII VEHICLES ONLY**

    MODELS: 1995 CHEVROLET AND GMC C/K, S/T, M/L, G MODELS WITH 4.3L ENGINE (VINS Z, W - RPOS LB4, L35) AND 4L60-E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (RPO M30)

    CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY EXPERIENCE EGR VALVE STICKING OR FOREIGN MATERIAL HOLDING THE EGR VALVE OPEN/CLOSED. THIS WILL CAUSE A DTC 32 TO BE SET, WHICH MAY BE ACCOMPANIED BY POOR DRIVEABILITY CONDITIONS SUCH AS ENGINE SURGE, ENGINE KNOCK, ENGINE STALL, ROUGH IDLE, AND/OR HARD STARTING.

    CAUSE:

CARBON DEPOSITS OR FOREIGN MATERIAL AFFECTING EGR VALVE OPERATION.

    CORRECTION:

RECORD STORED DTC'S, INSTALL NEW MEMCAL AND CLEAR ALL DTC'S. CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE MEMCAL FROM THE TABLE LISTED. AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW MEMCAL, PERFORM EGR VALVE TESTS LISTED BELOW:

EGR DEBRIS PURGE AND FUNCTION CHECK:

USING A TECH I/TECH II, WITH TRANSMISSION IN PARK, AND PARKING BRAKE APPLIED. WITH ENGINE AT 1,500 RPM COMMAND THE EGR VALVE TO 100% POSITION THEN COMMAND THE EGR VALVE TO 0% POSITION WHILE MONITORING ACTUAL AND DESIRED EGR POSITION. THIS PROCEDURE IS INTENDED TO CLEAR FOREIGN MATERIAL FROM THE EGR VALVE.

DID THE EGR'S VALVE DESIRED POSITION AGREE WITH THE EGR'S ACTUAL POSITION? IF YES, THE EGR VALVE IS FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. IF NOT, REPEAT THE DEBRIS PURGE TEST. IF THE EGR'S POSITION DOES NOT AGREE, REFER TO DTC 32 SECTION OF THE DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS MANUAL.

DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR ANY OTHER DTC'S THAT MAY HAVE BEEN STORED. IS THE ENGINE OPERATING NORMALLY? IF YES, PERFORM VEHICLE (EGR) ROAD TEST LISTED BELOW. IF NOT, REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

    VEHICLE (EGR) ROAD TEST:

DURING VEHICLE ROAD TEST, AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW MEMCAL, THE TECHNICIAN MAY NOTE INCREASED EGR VALVE ACTIVITY DURING LIGHT THROTTLE MANEUVERS. THIS INCREASED EGR VALVE ACTIVITY IS DUE TO THE EGR VALVE STROKING DURING WHICH THE ACTUAL POSITION WILL MOMENTARILY EXCEED THE DESIRED POSITION. THIS IS NORMAL EGR FUNCTION WITH THIS CALIBRATION. ROAD TEST THE VEHICLE FOR REPORTED DRIVEABILITY CONCERNS AND VERIFY EGR FUNCTION. HAVE CUSTOMER CONCERNS BEEN CORRECTED? IF YES, SYSTEM IS OK; RETURN VEHICLE TO CUSTOMER. IF NOT, REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE SECTION OF THE DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS MANUAL.

    Forklift help?

we have this forklift at work that is temorarly not working and i was wondering if anyone had some advice on how to fix it.

    its a 4 cylinder. Komostu

we changed the Battery, Spark plugs, plug wires, distributer cap, everything inside the cap. and it still won't start. the carb. is a bit drty, but i would not think that would hurt it too much.Forklift help? The way to determine whats wrong is check these things in this order. First check for spark. Use a tool, or get a co-worker to hold the coil wire while starting.(you'll know if theres spark or not by thier reaction) Next check fuel. Spray some starting fluid into the carb. If it starts with the starting fluid and wont stay running, you have a fuel problem. If both of those things check out check compression. You'll need a guage for that. Auto Zone will let you borrow one for free. You just have to put a deposit on it.

After you check these things you'll have a good idea on what to fix.Forklift help?one thing you didnt tell us was what type of fuel it used.

regular unleaded gas, deisel, or lp gas? if its lp gas there is a lp gas regulator between the tank and the carb, it will have a button right in the middle of it. push it and see if it spits out air, sometimes these lp gas forklifts get are in the fuel lines, and they wont fire for nothing until u relieve the air.

Fuel filter and carb not always getting fuel

85 Z28 camaro with a 350 small block. Two months back after you drove the car around town shut it off come back later it would start and shut back off when you put it in gear. So we did take everyones ideas from here and found the Distributor did need changed two of the spark plug wires was lose on the cap. We changed cap rotor and coil. three week later it wouldn't even try to start so we had it towed to the shop and the Ignition Module needed changed. Yesterday my son came home handed me the keys and told me to sell it. He said it stalled at a light and wouldn't start so he pushed it off the road and walked home. I went to try it and it started great but ran for a few seconds and shut off. I checked the fuel filter it was only half full and then i checked the carb it was dry no gas at all. I came home got the starting fluid went back spayed it in the carb it ran a few second and shut off so i did it again after about 10 minutes it started and shut off. I got out checked the fuel filter again and this time it didn't have any fuel in it.My husband pulled in and he got out and checked it and found no gas in carb or filter, He wanted to try the starting fluid it did the same thing with him so he wanted to call tow truck i said no way i think this car is in love with that tow truck. I got in and pumped it and he did the starting fluid and he ran as long as I keep my foot on the gas as soon as i let go it sounded like it was going to stall and did. i turned the key it started then shut off. I told him to do the starting fluid one more time and this time i pumped it and then held the gas pedal to the floor and it started running bad but running i drove it home putting it in neutral at red lights keep it running but it still sounded like it was going to stall. We got home pulled off the fuel line turned the key and no fuel at all came out and the fuel filter had no fuel at all.Not sure how this car made it home like that. We changed the fuel filter took it for a drive it run good checked fuel filter and carb they both had gas. This morning I started it and it was running great i pulled it out of the driveway so my husband to get out and then by the time i pulled it in to the garage it didn't sound right so i checked filter and carb fuel filter was dry and carb had very little. I told my son not to go far away from home with it but he did. he drove about 20 miles to a friends house and it didn't shut off about six hours later he left there to come home and about a mile from the house it shut off seconds after he left a red light. A few hours later we went to try to start it and two turns of the key and it started and we didn't use starting fluid. We welcome any ideas we have had to tow this car six times in the year we have had it because of it stalling and not wanted to start we have had it taking to three auto repair places and no can find out why. It has a new crate motor and the fuel pump it only seven months old the carb is a brand new holly just got it in Jan of this year. new wires and plugs in Jan. Fuel filter and carb not always getting fuelIf it has a carburetor then it has a mechanical fuel pump.

Disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and crank the engine. Does fuel spit all over the place?

YES: There is adequate fuel supply. The problem is probably in the carburetor.

    NO: Consider the following:

    1. Bad fuel pump

    2. Supply line collapse or restriction

    3. Clogged vents in gas cap

By the way, there should only be one fuel filter. It is located inside the carburetor right where the fuel line connects. There is a housing that contains (usually) a paper element.

Good luck!Fuel filter and carb not always getting fueltl;dr

Anyways, basic skimming points to a fuel filler cap. It might be fuel locking and starving the motor of fuel, and then when it dies it comes back a few minutes later cause the air in the line moves back.

Fuel filter and carb not always getting fuelHow are the fuel tank and pick-up? Lines from tank to filter? I would start there, based upon what I am reading. Filler cap on an 85? that far back ok, sounds good to me. If not move on. Thanks for the info.Fuel filter and carb not always getting fuelonly one possible / probable cause for not getting fuel, the filter in the tank or the pump its self, i would drop the tank drain and clean it, there are companies that do this-and have the tank coated on the inside, this really helps bigtime, it will also stop, repair and pinholes that may have been forming, the fuel pump has to be the mail problem, now, with a carb the pump is mechanically driven, it is on the passenger side of the block, since it will run with starting fluid the fuel pressure is the problem, holley makes a nice pump thats mechanical and you can adjust the position of the inlet and return /vent lines, good luckFuel filter and carb not always getting fuelTHE PROBLEM SOUNDS LIKE THE FUEL PUMP, CHECK FOE VOLTAGE AT THE FUEL PUMP WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS, YOU CAN DO THIS WITH A TEST LIGHT FROM KRAGEN OR SOMETHING. IF SO, THEN CHECK AND SEE IF YOU CAN HEAR IT, DO THIS BY TURNING ON THE IGNITION AND LISTEN FOR A LOW HUMMING NOISE. ALSO LOOK AND SEE IF ANY FUEL HOSE OR LINES ARE PINCHED. TELL ME IF IT HELPS.Fuel filter and carb not always getting fuelFirst does it have a electric fuel pump or a mechanical fuel pump if it has a mechanical fuel pump it could be worn out and leaking gas into the motor and not pumping it into the carb or if it has a electric fuel pump u could have a ground or power issue making the pump shut off now and then due to bumps (pot holes) in the road causing the wires to move and killing the pump so once u run out of the gas thats in the carb the car stalls out Fuel filter and carb not always getting fueltry the crankshaft position sensor, and the throttle position sensor if you have either one of those ,,,,

also it sounds like your TIMING is off ..i don't think it is the timing chain though because you didn't mention a back fire.............i think your spark is hitting after the fuel has been released ....which leads me to think it may be your fuel pump .....i understand that it is about 7 months old but autozone has been having problems with fuel pumps the last few months..also check for a fuel relay for your vehicle......autozone.com has online repair manuals and troubleshooting guides and componet locator guides for many vehicles

How much would a mechanic charge....?

i am going to change some spark wires, valve cover gasket and spark plugs. I was wondering what a machanic would charge to change all of this. a ball park figure. I changed a guys timing belt and valves for 250 and i was told i did that super cheap. I know engines just really dont know what to charge people. Just something fun to do on my spare time but want to be really cheap but also make it worth my whileHow much would a mechanic charge....?you had better be careful as an unlicensed and unqualified mechanic you could be liable if a car fails or crashes due to your work especially on things like timing belts or brake systems you will not be able to get insuranceHow much would a mechanic charge....?for a union mechanic, 750 or more. for a regular person 250 is a good price for all.How much would a mechanic charge....?depends on car..year/make/model.....older cars 50-75 newr up to 250...

How much could i see my truck for?

I want to get rid of my big truck and get a small car cause of gas

    I have a 94 Ford F-150 5-8 liter 4x4 extended cab step up with 188285 miles

it has new brake pads front and back, new ball joints in front, new spark plugs, wires and distributor cap and rotor runs, and oil changed great and pretty good on gas for a big truckHow much could i see my truck for?you can see it for free, but only sell it for 2500 or lessHow much could i see my truck for?Go to www.kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book), fill in all the stats on your truck, and it will tell you how much you can get out of it.How much could i see my truck for?look at kbb.com or edmunds.com for a resale price, however it will probably be a little less since these types of vechiles are not in demand at the moment. .How much could i see my truck for?At this time trucks like yours are not in high demand. So what you think it is worth, divide that by 2 and hope you can sell it. I have a truck like this and I know what it is worth, can I get that much for it, NO! If I want to sell it than I'll get about half of what its worth.. that is if I could find a buyer. So you will need to decide if the lost you get is worth the gas you'll save.

  • Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?

Ok here are all the details to this thing going on with my car. First so everyone knows, it is a Chevy Lumina z34 1993 with a dual cam overhead v6 in it, 3.4L. Ok now second we have replaced the air filter, air breather, fuel filter, and have checked all the fuel lines, poured fuel injector cleaner in the car and cleaned battery wires, changed the spark plugs and changed valve cover gasket (different problem, there was oil on the spark plugs for a while so ya hehe). The problem with my car is that it starts decent in the morning when i have let it sit overnight, and also starts good if you start it up right after you shut it off, but if you let it sit for like 2 hours or so then you have to give it gas to help it start (feather the pedal). So everyone knows also, the temperature gauge (inside the car) slowly gets over half (has gotten really hot, up to 260 degrees actually, and i thought it was the thermostat but i don't think this will affect how the car starts will it?) Anyways, then drops back down to a quarter, then slowly rises again and repeats, it doesn't seem normal but idk. Another thing is i filled the car with gas (completely full) and the gas tank leaked about half a gallon of gas and then stopped. (The leak came from underneath the car in the middle, where the gas tank is). Any ideas on what is wrong with it yet? Anybody? If you have anymore questions about info of what I have done with the car, noises it makes or anything like that, just type it up here on the page and I will answer back within a couple hours. TY, please everyone help! So in need of help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?Well to start your seals are leaking. That is how oil got on your spark plugs. If oil is leaking then you probably have low oil. That can be very bad. You must check your oil every time you get gas. You have been lucky up to this point. If you run the oil reservoir too low you will seize the engine, it will freeze and will not work. You either get a new engine or new car. It is worth the two minutes to check the oil.

Second it sounds like your water or antifreeze is low too. I know everybody is in a hurry these days but you need to take care of the vehicle that takes care of you and keeps you protected.

Terrible things can happen to you from sheer laziness.

Picture breaking down in the wrong part of town all alone in the dark. You will wish you took the time.

Start caring better for your car it will run for more years to come. Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?you say it,s hard to start after it warms up? this is just a guess but have the coil tested. if a coil gets too hot then it can break down and hard to start. you say the tank leaks? maybe it,s sucking air from the leak. Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?if a car gets too hot it is harder to start until it cools alittle bit then should start fine. you do need to find out where the gas leak is and repair it im sure its not helping the situation at all.
