How to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting?

I was chaining the spark plugs on my grand prix and were the spark plug meet the wire there a metel tube around the wire well when i replaced the spark plug and pressed it down the metel tube seemed loose is that normal are do i need to do something to that!! And on the other spark plug i pulled it to hard and now the part that claps on to the spark plug is showing some and i cant get the plastic sleeve to cover it!!! is that a problem and if so what can happen!! Thanks BrandonHow to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting?Along with new wires you should get a distributor cap and rotor. About the wiggly cylinder I don't know what it could be but i dont think it will be a problem. How to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting? You need to buy some new spark plug wires. You should get new wires every time you change the plugs. How to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting?use a pair of plyers to crimp that part tighter so it grabs the head of the plug good and tight,, be real careful not to put a hole in the rubber with the plyers, if your scared u will ruin the rubber use an old rag around the wire and grip it that way,, dont put to much force on it or u wont get the plug in it no more,, take a cpl times to get it right,,and when u replace the plugs its a good idea to use antiseize on the threads and conductive grease on the park plug boot to aid in the next removal,,ArtHow to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting? No thats not a problem . Your wires may be bad but even when there new they can be hard to get on. If you just push hard on the wires you will feel it click and it wont be loose at all.

If you can see the clamps in the wires sticking out it wont be a problem. If you damaged the wire to bad it will just not work and it wont fire off that plug but it will be fine. Wires will last a long time so it will probably be fine.

  • 2003 mistubishi eclipse check engine light on. Changed plugs and wires problem went away and now has come back?

Ok here is where it all started. My radio screen went off, the radio still works but the screen is blank. So, I have to guess what the station is because it doesnt show up over the screen! ugh, this sucks. Then, the check engine light came on about a month later. Then, i changed the spark plugs and wires, the check engine light went off and the car drove perfectly again. (the radio screen still has remained off) now it's about a month and a half later and the check engine light came back on and the car is driving the same terrible way; it is shaking at idle and sputtering when it drives. It feel like a misfire again, so myquestion is, What do you think this is and how can I solve it? I have been hearing it could need new coil packs, as the is a little over 100,000 miles now and I realize little wear and tear problems are going to occur. has anyone experienced anything similar, please please help me! I need a knowledgeable mechanic!2003 mistubishi eclipse check engine light on. Changed plugs and wires problem went away and now has come back? The radio display has nothing to do with the motor problem.

You need to have the car scanned for codes to know what to repair. The coils are usually OK but if you have a misfire code many times it's because oil gets on the coil boots and wires. You need to replace the valve cover gasket and the 4 plug tower seals which are inside the valve cover.

Inspect the inside and outside of the coil boots for white marks caused by the spark arcing. The coil boots are sold separately at the dealer, you don't need coils. Only use NGK plugs! Bosch and Autolite plugs will cause the arcing problem.2003 mistubishi eclipse check engine light on. Changed plugs and wires problem went away and now has come back?possibly the belt

2004 Ford Focus 2.3 Liter, Changing the spark plugs?

I want to change the spark plugs on my 2004 Ford Focus. The problem is, it's the California emissed 2.3 Liter vice the US 2.0 liter. I have the Chilton's, but that is primarily for the 2.0 and ZTec motors. The manual specifically says the 2.3 liter does not have spark plug wires, but speaks of removing them another way - I am pretty good mechanically, but I cannot understand how to do this procedure.2004 Ford Focus 2.3 Liter, Changing the spark plugs? You are correct that your engine has no spark plug wires. Instead you have four COPs (coil-on-plugs). Simply disconnect the electrical connector and remove each 7mm bolt securing each COP to the engine for access to the spark plugs. Be sure to use only the proper Ford/Motorcraft plugs gapped to the factory spec of 0.049%26quot; to 0.053%26quot; (1.25 to 1.35mm) for the best results. Hope this helps.2004 Ford Focus 2.3 Liter, Changing the spark plugs? Not the type of thing you should do with a new car. Please take it to your local ford dealer. Most spark plugs on newer cars should be replaced every 100k miles. There is more to this than you think.2004 Ford Focus 2.3 Liter, Changing the spark plugs?i think on that one they have coils on each plug take the screw out and remove to get to the plugs2004 Ford Focus 2.3 Liter, Changing the spark plugs?stick with what ford girl said but I am adding additional reccomendations apply dialectric grease to the inner side of the coil on plug boot (cop) also use antiseaze on the spark plug threads only.while your there its a good idea to do your fuel and air filters as well.

My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?

I drive a 1999 Ford Taurus. %26quot;I%26quot; know to only take off one spark plug/wire at a time but he took them all off and of course is trying to figure out how they go. But when he was doing this, a small fire started. We poured water on it, but I'm concerned about damage and what started it. HELP?My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?the engine will back flow the fire if you don't have the spark plugs in the right order what causes this is it ignites in the cylinder when the intake valve is open and ignites the fuel as its coming in if no hoses were burnt or anything on the outside of the motor you should be fine just get the correct firing order and put them on right and you should be fine

PS it can burn as it kicks the fuel backMy husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?Should not have been anything under the hood to catch fire. Tow it to a professional to diagnose-it sounds like he knocked something loose. As far as how bad the damage is-kinda hard to see from here....................................My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?Should not of dumped water in there like that. I would take it to the shop but if little bit of water went in the motor .You can get a manual or maybe even the owners manual you have and it should tell you the order the plugs go.

How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?

hi. i decided to replace spark plugs and wires my own, because i think it is a good opportunity for me to learn more about cars. i have no idea about cars yet, i cant even change car battery my own, but this time, i want to take times and try it. first what tools i need for replaceing those spark plugs and wires? and is it too hard for beginner to do it??How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?knowing the car would help, but your going to need a spark plug socket which there are different sizes but they are cheap, you will need a ratchet, an Extension for the ratchet wouldn't hurt to have a few different lengths laying there, and its alot easier with a u joint for your socket, then you will need plugs and wires, its not hard to do, i will tell you to take one spark plug wire off put then the spark plug gap the plug to what ever it says, under the hood on the label it will say gap xx-xx amount, spark plug gappers are 3 or 4 bucks and last a life time, you can gap them all at once to start out too, then you put the new plug in, find the closest length wire and put it in, and repeat on the next one, chances are the wires will not be the same length exactly due to patents and other things, so just the closest one, and the reason i say take them off one at a time is because you will not need to know the firing order that way, and you will not mess up the wires and firing order and get your self in a bind, also, you may break a spark plug so you may end up buying an extruder they are 10-15 bucks for a cheap one, and if you want to do it a good way and make it easier for next time buy a small container of anti- seze and put it on the threads of the spark plug before screwing it in, your wires should come with a small thing of die elecric grease and use it spairingly or buy a small tube of it for 5 bucks, and you can find torque specs. on how tight to make the spark plugs but then you need a torque wrench so just make them snug- tight but not tight tightHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself? You don't usually need any tools, unless the wires are under a cover that bolts down or something. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?Depends on what kind of car you have and the type of engine and what kind of spark plug wires it has. Some cars, the wires just pop off. Mine, a Chevy, the wires have to be unbolted. That's only after you take the damn air cleaner off first! Good luck. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself? You'll definitely need a spark plug socket, the correct size for you plugs. Probably 5/8 deep well, either a handle or rachet to turn the socket. And a good eye for detail.

You need to twist the spark plug wire at the boot on the plug and pull.

Good luck, for the first time I recommend having someone who knows how there, just for pointers. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?easiest tools are a ratchet, plug socket of the correct size an extension to fit the ratchet, a universal joint for the socket, and a spark plug gapping guage. Do only one plug %26amp; wire at a time.. Match the old wire for length as close as u can to one of the new set. make sure the new wire is properly seated on the new plug and the coil pack/distributor. Do one at a time till theye are all done. I f'got to mention check the gap on the plug with the guage before installing the plugsHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself?tools:

    spark plug socket

masking tape or post its with tape

    remove coil packs and/or wires

label wire with tape- for that cylinder. set up 1-4 from left to right, like u read.

    remove plugs

make sure new ones are gapped. install until hand tight then turn 90 degrees.

now replace wires by length size as u have them labeled.

also check out youtube for video walk thrus. a few are availableHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself?First, locate your plugs, and see how easy they are to get to. Some cars are real easy, but others can be very hard, requiring removing parts and or removing fender covers, tilting the engine or whatever.

If you can get to one plug, try putting a spark plug socket wrench on it ( a tool you will need). There are different sizes, so it could be 5/8, 3/4 or metric of those sizes. (I don't know metric. probably a 17 or 18 or maybe 19).

Once yu find out what socket will fit, use that on all spark plugs. These sockets are deep, like three to four inches long. Then you will need a socket drive rachet. A 3/8 inch drive rachet wrench works good. It goes on the socket you will use, so make sure your socket is also made for 3/8 drive. It has a square hole on top that is 3/8 inch.

You might need some extensions also, maybe different lengths, like 2 inch, 4 inch, 6 inch and10 inch. these can be put together to form a longer one, if needed, lik the 10 inch plus the 4 inch will make a 14 inch extension. Some of the places to get to spark plugs, can be hard to get to and you need long extensions.

Before you start, take some masking tape, and put one piece on each plug wire, and put a number on it with a felt tip pen, so that you know which plug each wire goes to. Number the same as each cylinder. I don't do this, I know where they go, but at times, even I get confused.

Pull the plugs first, leave the wires alone for now, but pull the boots off the plugs as you go along. Turn each plug, to the left, to loosen it, and then keep turning until all the way out.

Take the new plug and set the gap, with a gapper, to the specificed gap, and put on the washer, and put it in the hole, tighten up carefully, do not cross thread them. If it acts like it is binding while going in, come back out, your are cross threading. Aluminum engines cross thread easily and being soft metal, can ruin the threads inside the hole. Tighten the plug snugly but do not over tighten, you can break the plug.

Gap each plug before you put it in. Do not use oil on the threads. Once you get all the plugs back into their prospective holes, then you can start on the wires. Remove only one at a time, and replace it with a new one. Then do another one, and replace it. Until you got them all.

If you jump the gun and take them all off, you could be trying to remember where they went. When you are done, check your firing sequence, starting with number one on the distributor cap and going around in the direction of fire.

It would be a good idea to find the fire sequence before you start and write it down, along with which way the distributor turns, and mark number 1 on the distributor so you know where to start when you check the firing order.

For instance, on a 6 cyclinder (some, not all) 1 5 3 6 2 4 is the firing order. You would start with number 1, go around clockwise, next would be 5, then 3 and so on. And of course, number one would go to number one plug, near the front of the engine, 5 would be next to last near the back.

this was a quick lesson, and depending on your car, it could be easy or very hard. So take your time, figure out what needs to be done, and do it. There are manuals in libraries, usually, that will help. You need to know the gap for the plugs, to set them.

    Good luck and have fun.

A couple of my friends and I already tried but we cannot get the wires to come out of the metal surrounds around the spark plugs. How do i change the spark plugs on my 2001 Grand Prix GT?twist and pull... you may end up needing new wires for it if you tear them, but there's not a whole lot you can do. use a little dielectric grease in the boots when you reinstall them...How do i change the spark plugs on my 2001 Grand Prix GT?yea its hard sometimes..they stick..grab the rubber boot and just pull like a mother...try wiggeling the also. How do i change the spark plugs on my 2001 Grand Prix GT?Be careful when pulling the spark plug boots off of the spark plugs.Make sure you pull them by the boot and not by the wire itself.Sometimes twisting to the left or right a couple times and pulling is enough to free the plug wires boots from the plugs. If they are on there that good and refuse to come off see if you can grip the boot with pliers and gently pull them off.How do i change the spark plugs on my 2001 Grand Prix GT?yes its kinda tricky and difficult.. those damn GM designs are stupid... thats why I bought a toyota.. and got rid of the grand prixHow do i change the spark plugs on my 2001 Grand Prix GT?Also make sure when you are taking the wires and plugs out that you go in a pattern. #1 cylinder is driver's side front....odd cylinders driver's side, even passengers.

If you lost #1 on the cap, you'll need to rotate the engine over until the #1 cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke (TDC) and the timing marks are lined up. Be SURE you are on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke. You can determine this by pulling the spark plug out and placing your finger over the hole. You will feel the compression building behind your finger as you bump the engine over. Don't worry - it won't hurt you (its not dangerous) and you'll probably need a helper if you have to do this part.

Once you have the #1 cylinder @ TDC on the compression stroke, pull the distributor cap and observer the rotor, wherever it is pointing on the cap, that's #1.The spark plug wires goy croosed , i need to know how to number the wires corrctly. 1997 chev p/u 1500 5.7 305Dallas gave an excellent answer, but forgot one thing: the rotation direction on the distributor. • 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs?

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4. I changed the spark plugs on it just as a routine maintenance item. How important or critical is it that the spark plug wires be changed also? They are not damaged, or cracked and the inside that snaps on the spark plugs are fine. The car has 91,000 miles on it and they were the original spark plugs so i would assume they are the original wires as well. If they are still ok is it nessecary to change them or can I leave them as is? Thanks2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs? As a rule, I change the wires when I change the spark plugs. The wires internally deteriorate, so they need to be changed.2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs? If there is no damage to the insulation or the connectors on your plug wires and the car is running ok, then you don't need to change the plug wires yet.2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs?Run the engine in near darkness, and then look and listen. If you see little electrical arcs, or hear a snap-crack, there is high-voltage electrical leakage. Of course, running the engine at idle doesn't exercise the ignition system very hard, so you can add something to the test by spraying the plug wire ends with clean water from a household spray bottle.

Another test: With a jumper wire, ground the metal shank of a screwdriver that has a well-insulated handle. Then, run the tip of the screwdriver along the length of each wire and all around at the coil and plug boots. This will often produce an arc from the wire to the screwdriver.

Now look at the wires under good lighting. If they are damaged by abrasion, oil-soaked, cut, burned from contact with the exhaust, or have a dried-out look with heat cracks, it definitely shouldn't be a surprise if you see arcs in the dark under some conditions. However, if they look bad but there are no arcs, do a resistance check.

A conventional plug wire has a resistance of 10,000 to 15,000 ohms per foot of length--if it's measurably higher, the wire probably is bad. An absolutely failed wire will have a hairline break somewhere, and the resistance will be infinity.

How do I change the spark plugs in a 2005 Honda Civic VP?

I want to avoid taking it to a dealership if I can.Changing spark plugs on a 99 Cad Catera? The spark plugs are located under the upper plenum on this vehicle. When you open the hood there is a large plastic cover to be removed, the upper plenum is an aluminum item typically attached by 10 to 12 bolts. Once the plenum is removed you will have access to the spark plugs. The spark plugs are platinum and expensive. It is typical to only have to replace them after 100,000 miles. thanksChanging spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?I've had to change many of thoes (I work in a garage) and they still cause problems. Are you just pulling the wires off with your hands or a spark plug wire puller? by pulling them by hand you have a chance of breaking the wires inside and damaging the wires. Also the wires should be looked at and replaced if needed. Same with the cap and rotor (if not and electric distributor, I can't remember on that engine) as for the last two plugs, take spark plug puller pliers and bend the end to a 90 degree angle, I did that to the ones in my tool box, and it works a lot better. and that metal shield is a heat shield, so when you get them off, make sure you put them back on, or else you can damage with wires with the heat of the exhause manifold. Also, there should be 3 plugs in the front, and 3 in the back, so the front four?Changing spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?like most newer cars im sure its a front wheel drive so the motor is sideways, this sucks...i have a galant and they ended up having to remove the intake manifold to get to the back plugs.have you tried coming up from under the car?get it on jack stands in the front, but leave the floor jack for extra support, try to get it high enough to where you body fits under the car, make sure IT IS FIRM.shake it to make sure its stable.once i did this to my pontiac grand am, and bam.i had acess to the plugs.good luckChanging spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?OK are you ready? There is a solid engine strut mounted from the engine to a front mount. Get a coat hanger ready, remove the nut and bolts on the BOth sides of the mount and remove the strut. You will need a pry bar or something close to it to now pull the motor to the front of the car, engine will move a good 3 -4 inches. I think at this point yo will understand what the hanger is for, if you have help would nice for them to loop the hanger through the mount holes that you just moved to hold the engine forward. this will give you as much room as you can get. Good Luck to you. Well, either way, you should get a good set of automotive socket wrenches with an extension and a socket made specically for removing spark plugs. You could get a breaker bar too, but you prolly shouldn't need it for spark plugs.Changing spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?amigo,. you must remove front engine mounts. in park push car back wards, engine will flip forward,. this Will make it a breeze to change,. i recommend to replace your wire too,.after wires are pullout they get damage.this will save you a lot of trouble..Changing spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?I didn't any plugs could get off themselves, but if you talk to the others real sweet , maybe they will too...Changing spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville? When you change your spark plugs, invest in the wires also... they may be replacement plugs (hopefully), and sometimes, different vehicles will have the wire size precise with the plugs that are installed by the manufacturer. Sounds really dumb, it is true.

While I was changing my spark plug, I broke the spark plug wire. The spark plug wire is removed from the spark plug. How do I remove the wire from the coil/engine?

I need to replace the spark plug wire now- since it's broken. I have a John Deere Riding lawnmower LA115. I can get access to where the wire connects to the coil/engine. I want to be more careful this time and wanted to ask for advide.

They will tell you what the gap should be on the fly wheel. Really sounds more likely you broke the plug head to me. Look up a Briggs and Stratton Place in your area I came up with that motor for your mower. Sorry can't help more. I'm worried you might have to do a bit of soldering. If you find that you haven't really broke the spark plug wire , which I almost find unbelievable, I'll try harder, just thinking its a broken spark plug. How much to change spark plugs?

I have a 1989 toyota celica st and I am looking to put it platinum spark plugs to make it last longer. Do I have to get new wires too? How much would it be for just these two?How much to change spark plugs?platinum spark plugs can range in price anywhere from 2 dollars a piece to 8.. personally the brand u choose as your replacement would be the same as the wires.. yes the spark plugs and wires should be replaced at the same time to be able to adjust and operate the same as they wear as the years go by.. same as replacing oil filter along with new oil.. your probably looking anywhere in the range of 30 to 120 depending on how much your wanting to spendHow much to change spark plugs?plugs'll probly be $20 and wires'll probly be another $20How much to change spark plugs?go with iridium plugs, ngk makes them they are better. you do not have to replace your wires. make sure the plugs are gapped correctly.the ngk plugs are about 14-20 a plug. but worth it on the small amount of increased fuel economy. i didn't change the wires on my trans am.if you can do it yourself or ask some one to do it. you will get ripped off almost anywhere. i got quoted $285 to do the plugs in my trans am. that wasn't even counting the price of the plugs. How much to change spark plugs? If you don't have any miss firing or rough idle I wouldn't worry about the plug wires just change the plugs but use some anti seize on the threads of the plugs. This keeps them from seizing in the threads in the head of the engine. But make sure you gap the plugs before installing them. And make sure of the torque when putting them in and not to over tightening them because aluminum heads with spark plug holes will strip out them threads.Use a torque wrench if you don't have one borrow one from some body if you can't buy one from a parts store and ask what the torque should be on the plugs. How much to change spark plugs?I put Bosch twin electrode platinums in my Corolla 6 years ago and they're still good. I've ,since then , driven to Canada, Disneyland in Orange Co, Keystone Colorado and Vail Colorado, plus daily commute in the SanFrancisco Bay Area. I can talk about 60,000 miles on a set of platinum plugs and the original plug wires. Invest $10- $15 on those spark plugs and don't worry for the next 6 years at least. How much to change spark plugs? If you haven't replaced the ignition wires, cap and rotor with Denso or NGK parts within the past 50,000 miles you'd better add that to the %26quot;to do%26quot; list along with Denso or NGK platinum or longer lasting iridium spark plugs. Do not attempt to second-guess or re-gap iridium spark plugs. The center electrode is so small and hard it will spall off or break if you attempt to do so.

How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?

    i have a 1998 chevy camaro

i just changed the plugs and wires yesterday.

so how many miles do i have til i need to again?

thanks ;)How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs? It all depends upon the brand and type of spark plugs you just installed in your cylinder heads. Inexpensive non-platinum or iridium plugs last 25 - 30,000 miles. Platinum plugs are good for 50,000 miles while long lasting iridium plugs will go 75 - 100,000 miles.

A couple of small tips the next time you install spark plugs: Wipe a small amount of %26quot;Never Seize%26quot; compound on the threads of the plugs before installation. Wipe a liberal amount of Silicone ignition grease inside each spark plug boot before snapping them back on the plugs. This step seals out moisture and allows easy removal of the boots from the plugs anytime in the future. The Never Seize prevents plug and cylinder head thread damage during removal or installation. Any NAPA or Carquest store has both of these inexpensive products.

Please consider a fresh set of AC-Delco or MSD ignition wires every 50,000 miles. As spark plug wires age electrical OHMS of resistance goes up inside the core and electrical dielectric insulation on the outside of the wire goes down. Don't consider cheap box-store ignition wires. ACDelco distributors or any Chevrolet dealer has AC-Delco ignition wires. autopartswarehouse.com, partstrain.com and autopartsgiant.com. has MSD ignition wires.

In plain English it's more difficult for the electrical energy to pass through the wire as they age. The high voltage tends to leak through the outer insulation jacket as the wire gets older. High under-hood heat and vibration deteriorates ignition wires. How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?I think for your car its every 100k mi. Don't quote me on that. For earlier models, I think like '95 and older its every 60k mi.

However, my personal opinion, as the odometer keeps going the gap on the spark plug is changing ever so slightly. You might want to check the gap every 10k. I used to own a '91 ford escort when I was going to college, I was tight on money and needed for my car to last. It was a POS but it worked. I would change my spark plugs every 10k mi. It was only like $10 - $15.

Country Boy, if you don't know what your talking about, stop. Electrical wires can last for years and years, just look at all the residential and commercial wiring. The current flow through the wires doesn't change over time. Heat, direct sunlight and vibration are what cause the insulation on the wires to deteriorate. However, this has no effect on the current flow just the ability to insulate the wire from arcing and protect it from the extreme heat. The only thing that damages the wires are the movement of the wires as you move them out of the way to work on the car. You can possibly break the wire or snap the connectors that are inside the boot and connect the wires to the spark plugs. There is no electricity that leaks out since the rubber is an insulator.

And the anti-seize gel does not protect the threads from damage against the spark plug or however you put it. Yes its good to put it on but to prevent water from going into the threads and the extreme heat vaporizing it causing rust to form between the spark plug and the cylinder head. If the spark plug does seize and you don't know what you're doing then you could damage the threads on the cylinder head manifold, but that could be repaired as well. How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?factory recommends a length of time and mileage. a gm or chevy dealer can help you.

I have a 2000 Plymoth Neon and I was wondering how hard was it to change the spark plug and wires?

I'm trying to do this for the first time. I'm not sure how to go about it so if anybody can give me some ideas on whether this is better to take to a mechanic or is it actually possible for me to do on my own would be appreciated. Thanks alot. :)I have a 2000 Plymoth Neon and I was wondering how hard was it to change the spark plug and wires?Very easy to do yourself and even though it is cheap, you can still save about $50. First off go to an autoparts store and buy 4 spark plugs and the wires. Tell them what kind of car you have and they will get you what you need. If you don't have a tool set you will also need to buy a ratchet, 6%26quot; extension, and spark plug socket. You should really get an extension that will lock to the socket so that you dont get the socket stuck down the spark plug well. They will also be able to tell you what size spark plug socket you need. A spark plug socket looks just like a regular deep socket, but it has rubber inside to cusion the pocelin and help to keep you from breaking it. You will also need a spark plug gapper tool.

Now open your hood. Remove the first spark plug wire from the spark plug. It may be stuck on so be careful. Since you are replacing the wires as well it doesn't really matter, but usually you want to make sure that you pull from the rubber boot that fits over the plug and not the wire. If you pull from the wire you can pull the wire out of the boot and ruin the wire. Now put the socket and extension into the well and turn it until you feel the socket fit over the plug. Attach the ratchet and turn counter clockwise until you feel no more resistance and the plug can pull out. If the plug keeps falling out of the socket you can stick the boot back in the well and pull the plug out with that.

Next you will want to take out a new plug and gap it according to the specifications for your car. If you look on the underside of your hood you should find several stickers. One will tell you the proper spark plug gap. The gap refers to the space between the electrode of the plug and the metal above it. Most new plugs come pre-gapped, but I still like to double check. Now just put the plug back in the hole and tighten it up. Start tightening it without the ratchet to make sure that you don't cross thread it. It should go in very easy with no force for a few turns. When you are removing the plug and putting it back in make sure that the extension is perpendicular to the engine head. If you move it around from side to side you can break the spark plug because the body is made of porcelin (very fragile).

When the plug is back in follow the spark plug wire to the distributor and unplug it at that end. Now take out your new wires and find the one that is the same length and plug it into the distributor and the spark plug. Repeat for the other 3 cylinders.

Good luck with your project and thanks for not being lazy. OHC 4-cylinder engines are very easy to change plugs and wires because all the plugs are right on top of the engine and it is easy to get to them all.I have a 2000 Plymoth Neon and I was wondering how hard was it to change the spark plug and wires?you can totally do it yourself, but it's a cheap operation, I'd go with a proI have a 2000 Plymoth Neon and I was wondering how hard was it to change the spark plug and wires? It's easy to do with mechanical knowledge. Remove one end of the wire and follow it to its destiniation, disconnect it, match it up with the new wire and install the new wire. Move on to the next one and repeat until they've all been changed.Do not remove them all from your engine at once. Change them one at a time so you dont mess up the firing order. How do i know which spark plug wires go to which place when changing my spark plug wire on my 99 chevy tahoe? They do not have different powers.

Best way to change them if not familiar with this job, is to take them out one at a time and replace with the new one of like length, that way there should be no confusion. How do i know which spark plug wires go to which place when changing my spark plug wire on my 99 chevy tahoe?Your in luck, your distributor cap has numbers on the top of it (1, 2, ... 8), so you know which plug to hook to which location.

The cylinder (plug) numbers are laid out like this on the motor:

    8 7

    6 5

    4 3

    2 1

    Bumper

So when you look at the motor, that is the layout.

You can easily remove all the wires at once, because of the numbers on the top of the cap. Then match up the plug wire length and install the new wires.

I fool-proof way is to remove and replace one plug wire at a time! Then you know what you removed so you know where to replace. Just use the same length wire as you removed.

The different lengths are just lengths, it has nothing to do with the amount of power supplied to the plugs (virtually anyway. If the wires were REALLY long they would have a larger resistance and reduced power to the plugs, but you don't need to worry about that).

I also need to replace the spark plug wires and the fuel filter and injectors. I tried to look it up but I can not find it anywhere. Please help me out if you can, Thank you.

Mandy MarieHow do I change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 chevy cavalier?Mandy, I don't suggest you do this repair yourself if doing it for the first time. If you wind up with loose spark plugs or crossed wires you could have a potentially dangerous if not lethal problem on your hands. Fuel filters are a pain in the butt on older chevys and not for beginners without the proper tools. You do not need new fuel injectors.

If you insist on trying it yourself, first get a manual cooresponding to your vehicle's year/make/model. go to AutoZone and explain that you are attempting to do a tune up on your car and they will provide you with the car manual, parts and tools to get the job done. They will most likely be able to answer any questions you have as well (they can explain about plug gapping, really easy). How do I change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 chevy cavalier?first off your not a ding bat.secondly- the gap they are referring to is located at the end of the spark plug and yes it may need to be checked. for your vehicle I believe the gap should be about.045 thousandths of an inch. got ot auto zone they can help. as for the wires- remove each plug one at a time, replace the plug and wire at the same time, helps to keep the firing order straight.fuel filter- should be changed every six months to a year.

as for the injectors-buy a good fuel system cleaner first, they do not need replacing unless they stop working, that will require a mechanic to know if that is necessary. How do I change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 chevy cavalier? To gap the plugs, you need a feeler gauge. In your owners manual it will tell you what the gap is. The gap is at the end of the plug that fits into the engine. The spark jumps the gap in order to fire the fuel.

Replace spark plug wires ONE AT A TIME. If you do not, you could mess up the firing order and the car won't start.

It will tell all you need to know. How do I change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 chevy cavalier?I think it's great that you want to learn how to maintain your own car. Why do you think the injectors need replaced? How do I change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 chevy cavalier?Mandy: You are attempting auto repairs you are not qualified to perform on your car in all likelihood. Unless you have previous auto repair experience or have a mechanic friend helping you, my advice is to have the work done by a reliable shop such as the GM dealer or an independent shop you find at http://www.IATN.net/shopfinderHow do I change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 chevy cavalier?get someone who knows how to help if you want to learn,i used to do it all the time ,but they make it much harder to repair your ownHow do I change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 chevy cavalier?what you do is take out 1 plug at a time so you won,t get the firing order messed up.take off the plug wire, get a 5/8 plug socket ( a deep well socket ) ratchet and take out the plug, take the new plug and gage it. you can get a plug gage at auto zone pretty cheap. find out what they gage at, take the gage and slide it between the tip of the plug until you feel a slight drag on the gage. put the new plug in, hook up the plug wire and do the same with the rest. as for the injectors leave them alone. it could just be the fuel filter and plugs if it misses.

Replacing the distributor on this engine was easy. The only tricky part was making sure the #1 piston was at TDC before removing the old distributor. A compression gauge in the #1 piston spark plug hole made that easy too. • How do i change the spark plug wires on a pontiac sunfire?

i drive a 2.2 L 1997 pontiac sunfire. how do i cahnge the spark plug wires. i know where they start and where they end i just can't get to the coils. how can i cahnge them? How do i change the spark plug wires on a pontiac sunfire?Since the coils are located on the backside of the engine, they're very difficult to reach. (but obviously, you already know that) Make sure the engine is cool before you start so you won't get burned. I have a 1997 Cavalier with the 2.2L which is essentially the same car. When I changed my plug wires, I had to reach down between where the power steering pump and the A/C receiver/dryer is. There's very little room and I pretty much had to do everything by feel because you can't see down where you're sticking your arm. Change each individual plug wire one at a time so you won't accidently get them hooked up wrong or crossed. Take your time and be patient...it won't be easy. I'm a big guy and my forearms are big so it was difficult for me to get my arm into that small space. It'll be easier for someone with thinner forearms. From what I can tell, that's the ONLY access to the coil. You can't even reach it from the underside.

Good luck! How do i change the spark plug wires on a pontiac sunfire?Unless they're damaged, they should not need to be changed. How do i change the spark plug wires on a pontiac sunfire?with the engine off

I have a 2003 ford expedition and need to change the spark plugs and wires. How do I do that?

Remove the old ones one by one and install new one. It is not an easy job, a perfect example of Fords idiocy.I have a 2003 ford expedition and need to change the spark plugs and wires. How do I do that?On the 1999 and later models of the 5.4L V8 you DO NOT have high voltage spark plug wires. The engine have 8 coils mounted directly on top of the spark plugs. You only have to remove one bolt on each of the coils. You then carefully pull them off the spark plugs. Once this is done, you remove the spark plugs and replace them with new ones (be sure to use some anti-seize to make it easier to replace them in the future). You then carefully replace the coils and put the bolts back in place. Be sure not to over tighten the bolts on the coils - you will damage the coils if you over torque them.

The cylinders toward the back of the engine is tricky to get to, but armed with a ratched, two or three extensions and a universal joint, you should be able to get in there.

i know u have to take them out and put them in the same order but how hard are they to get to and take outHow hard is it to change spark plug wires?well its not that hard if you know what your doing. i would recommend knowing your firing order and knowing where each wire came from upon removal and when you remove them all you need to lay them somewhere flat next to each other and compare length for length to their new counterparts. and make sure once you match the length you double check the length again and the put it exactly where the old counterparts came out of.How hard is it to change spark plug wires? It is not very hard at all. How to change spark plug wire on a 94 Taurus Station wagon?

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to change the spark plug wires on my 94 Taurus wagon. The gas station wanted to charge us $500 to change them along with the distributor cap/rotor and spark plugs.

How do you change the spark plugs on a 1999 Lexus ES300?

I have a 1999 Lexus ES300 and i was wondering how to change the back spark plugs on it? Also i was wondering on how to change the spark plug wires? If there are any websites which have pictures please post them. I went to a mechanic and they told me that it would be around 150 to do the job. ThanksHow do you change the spark plugs on a 1999 Lexus ES300?The mechanic's price is too much, you can easily change the spark plugs by having a spark plug remover. Instead of paying 150, use this to buy yourself a spark plug remover. If you wish to change the wires, simply pull the black rounded terminals and they come out easily. You must change all four spark plugs to ensure smooth combustion on all four cylinders. Changing new spark plugs will only require 20-30 minutes.

  • How do you change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 lincoln ls V8?

I would like to do this myself if I can. I dont know if it will be to much work. How do you change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 lincoln ls V8?The Lincoln LS has a distirbutorless ignition system, it uses a coil on plug system. There is no distributor, each plug has its own ignition coil in its wire. I would not recommend replacing these unless needed as they are expensive and typically shouldnt be replaced untill they fail to function. The LS features Motorcraft Platinum plugs that are rated for 100,000 miles. So I wouldn't change those untill 100,000 miles. If you are at 100,000 miles or if your plugs for some reason do need to be replaced then I believe on the LS you have a plastic cover to remove off the top of the engine and then the plugs and coils if I remember right are actually located under the fuel rail so you will have to depressurize the fuel rail by depressing the schrader valve. Then you can safely remove the fuel rail and access the plugs and coils. How do you change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 lincoln ls V8?you'll need a socket set, with another set of extenders and some u-joint looking things to allow the spark plug socket to fit in there. you probably already have a socket set. the extensions and u-joint thing will probably cost about $15 tops. i had to use them on my jeep grand cherokee. How do you change the spark plugs and wires on a 2000 lincoln ls V8?Stlbluesrams34 is on the right track. the LS with the v8 engine does not have a distributor or plug wires. It has a coil mounted individually above each plug. The platinum plugs will last a long time, but if yours is a high mileage car (75,000 or more) and needs it, you could do this job yourself. On top of each valve cover is a small cover plate held on with a few 8mm head bolts. You will have to remove some things to get enough access to them (especially on the drivers side). But you won't have to bother any fuel lines on the v8 engine. One 8mm head bolt holds down each coil. Loosen it and unplug the coil and remove it. It's a pain to get to some of them but be patient and you can do it. Don't forget since this engine has aluminum heads, be sure to do this job with the engine cold and use a little anti-seize on the new plug threads.

It has the 2.2L?I also own the SLOW 2.2L the coil packs are on the passenger side underneath the intake. they are numbered for each cylinder 1,2,3,4 very clearly, you can do all of them at once it is not a problem the number one cylinder is the very front one and 4 is the farthest back. if you have a misfire you probably just switched one of the plugs an easy way to tell is unplug each one whil it is running and see if one changes even more or if it doesnt make a difference.

    How to actually remove it?

Easy ! There is one ignition coil FOR EACH SPARK PLUG in this engine- six total You remove the two 10mm nuts holding each coil to the head cover, then the coils just lift right out. The spark plug is down in a well under its coil. You will see the top of the spark plug after that plug's coil is removed. There are three on each side. The drivers side may have a metal brace bar in the way. Unbolt this to get to the back coil and spark plug. Note that these are Platinum plugs and are not cheap. Use only the correct Acura recommended plugs. They are good for 60000 miles under normal use assuming the engine is in good shape. You need a standard deep-well spark plug socket tool to remove and install them. Caution: This engine has aluminum heads. DO NOT cross thread the plugs or you will have a big expensive problem. Also DO NOT remove them while engine is hot. You may want to blow out the dirt from the wells before taking the plugs out too, so nothing gets into the cylinders. Put a drop of oil or anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs. Makes them easier to get out next time. How do change the spark plugs on an 92 acura legend? Should I change my spark plugs when I change my spark plug wires on my 1995 Honda civic?

I have been having some rough idling and choppy acceleration. I did that test where you spray water on the wires at night and see if there is a spark. There was a tiny spark, barely noticeable, on one of them, so I decided Im just going to change them all, even though there isnt any noticable corrosion on the rubber. (Also, a little bit of water got under the distributor cap, and there were lots of little sparks dancing around in there... I know... Im not supposed to get water in there, but I ****** up. does that mean I have a distributor problem? I just replaced a failing distributor with a used one.)

Anyway, should I change my spark plugs when I change my wires? I dont know the last time they were changed.

Also, how do I know what size spark plugs/spark plug wires to buy? Are they pretty universal?Should I change my spark plugs when I change my spark plug wires on my 1995 Honda civic? It doesn't sound like you have a distributor coil problem. Just dry up all your components from all the water and moisture you've sprayed.

    http://www.hondacivicrepairs.com/idle-ai

If you appear to be getting spark on all 4 spark plugs (remove your sparkplug with the cable and tap it against the engine block while cranking about 8 times), inspect your Idle Air Control valve instead.

Look inside the screen and see if you have carbon build-up clogging air from entering your engine while on idle. If you do see carbon build-up, use carburetor cleaner spray to get the gunk off the screen. Also, clean or replace your Air Filter.

If this doesn't help, you may want to continue with replacing your distributor rotor, distributor cap, spark plug cables, and spark plugs.

When you visit your local auto parts store, they will ask you the year, model, make of your car and will give you a list of available parts compatible with your vehicle. I use the cheapest which works just fine for my Civic 95. You can also read the recommended spark plug by Honda in your manual or on the label against your upper timing belt cover.

Good luck!Should I change my spark plugs when I change my spark plug wires on my 1995 Honda civic?Since new plugs will cost next to nothing, and you can eliminate them as a problem, you may as well. You can go for the platinum+4's, which I've had good luck with, splitfire's also, or go for the cheapies if you want to save around $10. Also, you can make sure they're gapped perfectly with most plugs. The gap tool is available at the parts counter for about $2. They can also hook you up with the correct plugs and gap size for your car.Should I change my spark plugs when I change my spark plug wires on my 1995 Honda civic?don't know how good you are at work on these cars, but a distributor on this car sucks if you drop the rubber gasket into the engine....might want to let a professional do that.

but plugs and wires should do the job. engine backpressure is usually a problem for acceleration as well....might want to check your catalytic converter.Should I change my spark plugs when I change my spark plug wires on my 1995 Honda civic?take the plugs out and see how they are burning. if they still look good the regage them and put them back in. the man at the parts store can tell you what you need.

Change spark plugs & Wires or just plugs?

How do I know if I need to do both? I am doing this on my own. I have looked it up online on how to do it %26amp; It says nearly anyone can do it themselves. Am I able to just do the plugs? I have an 03 dodge neon. The check engine light is on %26amp; I have had the diagnosic test run on it and the only code that comes up is the gas cap which I have replaced but the light still comes on. My car is idoling not so good %26amp; The gas mileage is not as good as it was before. The man at advanced auto parts said he thinks I need a tune up. How do I know that's what the problem is? Can I just change spark plugs and not both the plugs %26amp; Wires? Thanks!Change spark plugs %26amp; Wires or just plugs? It's a fact that cheap non platinum or iridium spark plugs will be used-up after 30,000 miles of driving. Platinum tipped plugs last no more than 50.000 miles. Iridium plug will last 75 - 100,000 miles. *The trick is to remember to change ignition wires ever 50,000 miles regardless of spark plugs used. The fragile radio resistance carbon inner core cracks and breaks with under-hood heat and age. Electrical resistance goes up which can be verified with an ohms meter. Additionally the outer insulator jacket on the wires leak electrical voltage to ground inside the engine compartment. No way on this green Earth do ignition wires last the life of any car or truck. Mr. Know It All doesn't know everything! If they did last the life of the car why are so many companies selling replacements?

Don't use cheap box store spark plug wires. MSD, Taylor, Morroso and AC-Delco are the best ignition wires you can buy.Change spark plugs %26amp; Wires or just plugs?Spark plug wires should last the life of the car.

Drop us a line back and let us know how you did or if you have a problem. good luck.Change spark plugs %26amp; Wires or just plugs? Those companies that say gas cap when they pull the codes don't know what they are talking about. That code means there is not a full seal on the fuel system. (There is more connections to a gas tank then the fill cap) If your code is saying its the fuel problem then it is. You need to check everything going and coming from the gas tank. I had a simple hose come loose on my tank and that was the problem not the cap.Change spark plugs %26amp; Wires or just plugs?the code for evap leak could be from a leak other than the gas cap, and an evap system not working correctly would effect the fuel mileage. If the only code is evap leak, changing the plugs and wires would not fix an emissions leak. when you need a tune up you would get a code saying misfire. these spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 miles and unless they are damaged 80,000 miles on the spark plug wires.

Does anyone know how to change spark plugs and wires for a 95 ford aerostar?

I hear the plugs are under the vehicle. I'm looking for a free site to get tips, or infor you all can give me. ThanksDoes anyone know how to change spark plugs and wires for a 95 ford aerostar? The easiest means of changing them is to remove the engine cover from the inside of the cabin.

There are three snap-clamps holding the cover in place.

Place the shifter in %26quot;D-1%26quot; (all the way to the rear of the car) and release the snap on the driver's side, then the snap on the passenger's side, then the snap on the passenger's upper corner.

Remove the cover and change the plugs and wires.

Replace the cover carefully, or it could be damaged, or perhaps not seal well, and then there will be noise and hot air from the engine compartment while you drive.

SUGGESTION: Change the cap and rotor as well as the PCV valve at the same time. This will save a bit of effort when it comes time to tune it up again.Does anyone know how to change spark plugs and wires for a 95 ford aerostar? You can access most of the spark plugs from under the interior cover (Doghouse) On that year Aerostar, you will need to access 2 on the passenger side from underneath the vehicle behind the fender well. Very difficult to do without the correct swivels and sockets. Good Luck.Does anyone know how to change spark plugs and wires for a 95 ford aerostar? They shouldn't be under the vehicle unless the vehicle is on its roof.

It is really quit simple, you will need a spark plug socket, 12%26quot; extension, and a ratchet.

Remove only one wire at a time, and replace that plug and wire before moving to the next one.

Whatever you do, DO NOT take all the wires off at one time, they have to be in a certain order.

Before installing plugs, make sure that the gap is right(distance between contact points).

That info should be in your car manual, if not go .030-.040 gap.

How to change spark plugs and wires?well you should easily be able to locate your spark plug wires and that would be the easiest thing -

one end will be where you place plugs into the engine the other end will be your distributor cap - as you take out plugs from your dist cap make sure you number them with tape ( masking tape ) this is your fireing order and you do not want to mess this up -

buy the pregapped plugs if your not familiar with changing them this way you dont have to worry about the gaping tool - i cant stand them personally -

and basically all you have to do is unplugg from each end replace your plug and wires -

since you arent getting good milage consider replaceing your air filter also -How to change spark plugs and wires?View the Advance Auto online %26quot;todays tuneups%26quot; video for the basic spark plug and wire installation

You can get the torque values from the internet and the firing order should be stamped on the engine block, also the cylinder numbers should also be stamped on the block. Before you remove the wires, mark them the same as the cylinder numbers from which you removed them. leave them attatched to the distributer cap!!!! But make sure you mark them to match the cylinder mark on the block!! Then remove and replace the plugs, use the torque values. . . check each plug as they come out. there should be a nice uniform greyish white burnt look to them. note where the ones that look different came from and use the internet to find out what could have caused any irregular deposits on them. Then one by one replace the wires, making sure that you plug them all up to the same reciever on the distributer cap from which you removed them ONE AT A TIME!!! , them, remove the distributer cap, and line it up with the old one and trade the wires over to the new one, one by one, making sure that they are all in the SAME place they were on the old one, set aside, replace the rotor, you just pull it out and put the new one in, in the same position you found the old one in. then you reattatch the distributer cap and you should be on your way with MUCH better gas mileage!! Oh!! also replace your airfilter. . . umm you might also replace your fuel filter as well, sometimes it gets clogged up and messes with you mileage. . .? Good luck and I hope I helped some!! ^_^
